One of their specialties is finding hidden gem vineyards and today we have an excellent one from Ron Silva’s Silvaspoons Vineyard in Alta Mesa, Lodi. Nicknamed “California’s Portuguese grape king”, Ron and his vineyard are renowned for not only the care that goes into growing these extremely high quality grapes, but also his willingness to grow varieties that are rarely found in California.
The vineyard is situated between California’s Sacramento River Delta and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in the Alta Mesa (Spanish for “high table”) AVA in Lodi, and benefits from the afternoon Delta breezes. It also features soils similar to Portugal. As a result, Tempranillo (known as Tinto Roriz in Portugal) was an early addition to Ron’s collection of Portuguese and Spanish grapes.
And it turns out, Tempranillo has found quite a home in Lodi with a number of vineyards focusing on this variety since it does so well here. In fact, Lodi even has an annual “Tour of Tempranillo” weekend focused specifically on this grape.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Scotto Family Cellars Reserve Tempranillo opens with an expressive aroma of black cherry, leather, licorice, vanilla, blackberry, spice, cedar and more. It’s a fantastic start!
Taking a sip reveals similar flavors to the nose with juicy fruit in the mouth and well-integrated spice notes. It’s easy to drink but also complex, layered and delicious. This is an excellent example of Tempranillo.
It ends dry, juicy, a bit grippy and quite long on the lovely finish. It was just as good on day 2.
Tempranillo pairs wonderfully with pork, burgers and red meats (just to name a few), so with grilling season upon us this is a great wine to stock up on!
