Welcome to Shippey Vineyards. Our family vineyards are tucked away in the western hills above the Dry Creek Valley and they produce wines like no others. We make big wines in small lots and our story is the 21st Century equivalent of an old tale about farmers making wine in the hills.
We have been growing grapes on our property since we purchased it in 1968 (there was an an old vine field blend vineyard being tended then) and commercially since the 1980’s. By then most of the old-vine vineyards had been torn out or replanted, often with other varietals. We decided to go the other way and have planted our vineyards with these most Californian of grapes, the most Dry Creek Valley of grapes, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, partly because historically they’re the right grapes for our vineyard and partly because they make great wines.
Because we are so small (under 1000 cases per year) our wines are limited production individually handcrafted artisanal foods, each with its own distinct character. These are not wines you can find on the shelf of your local supermarket. These are not wines that are made to taste the same year after year and bottle after bottle like the giant wineries make. Our wines are hand crafted small lot wines, each with an individual and distinctive “voice” that speaks to its unique vineyard location, heritage and cultivation.
Surprisingly, given the tiny 80 case production on this Zinfandel, the SRP is quite reasonable at just $33, but we’ve been able to slash that price even further…

Situated at the base of Bradford Mountain on the western slopes of Dry Creek Valley, Shippey Vineyards is comprised of two small gold medal winning vineyards, one planted to Zinfandel, the Rocking Z Vineyard and the other to Petite Sirah, the Flaming J Vineyard. With its well drained gravelly loam soil and vines grafted to the St. Peters Church (Cloverdale) heritage clone, the Rocking Z Vineyard produces intensely flavored fruit with the spicy character indicative of Zinfandel grown in the premier growing region for this quintessential California variety.
The 2017 Rocking Z Zinfandel is our eleventh release and like its predecessors it displays a deep rich color, forward aromas and lively flavors of berries, black pepper and anise, with that wonderful Zin quality of being immediately drinkable while possessing the balance and structure to improve with aging.

The 2017 Shippey Vineyards Rocking Z Zinfandel opens with pleasing aromas of black cherry, dried fruit notes, black pepper and licorice plus a little chocolate and assorted spices. It continues to open up even more with time in the glass.
Taking a sip reveals this wine is definitely not shy in the mouth! Featuring a smooth mouthfeel with great balance, all those wonderful components from the nose come together beautifully and expressively when tasting. Fantastic, savory and juicy, this is a great example of Dry Creek Valley Zin that has aged very well and still has plenty of life left.
It ends dry and very long on the delicious finish and it just keeps getting better with air. This is drinking wonderfully right now. It was just as good on day 2.
