Methode Champenoise bubbles from Sonoma County, we review the Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Brut and Brut Rosé.
Sparkling Wines from Sonoma County, California.
With New Year’s Eve right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to review a pair of Trader Joe’s sparkling wines both made in the traditional method (methode champenoise) where secondary fermentation happens in the bottle. This is much more expensive than using the tank method like Prosecco, but today we have a couple budget friendly examples thanks to Trader Joe’s. Let’s check them out.
Like all the Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve wines, both are priced at $14.99. Also like most of these wines, there is very little info on the bottle, except that they are produced by Rack & Riddle, a large sparkling wine producer in California who make a number of private labels wines, as well as wines under their own label.
Up first, let’s take a look at the Brut.
From the bottle:
A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Sonoma County, California.
Produced and Bottled by Rack & Riddle
12.5% Alcohol
The Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Sonoma County Brut Sparkling Wine begins with a pleasing, classic aroma of citrus, green apple, a little tropical fruit and a bit of fresh baked bread. It’s a good start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be crisp and delicious with good depth and just the right amount of sweetness. This is surprisingly good stuff.
Plenty of fine tasty bubbles lead into the mostly dry, crisp, refreshing and long finish.

Up next, we’ve got the Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Brut Rosé.
From the bottle:
A blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc from Sonoma County, California.
Produced and Bottled by Rack & Riddle
12.5% Alcohol
The Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Sonoma County Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine opens with pleasing aromas of strawberry, citrus, a little grapefruit and touches of cherries and cranberry plus hints of chalky minerality and yeasty bread. It’s another nice start.
Taking a sip reveals plenty of big bubbles and similar flavors to the nose with a bit more cherry and berry in the mouth plus a little lime. The wine has plenty of acidity too which makes it taste relatively dry. Overall this is a very nice example of Brut Rosé especially at this price.
It ends crisp, dry and quite long on the satisfying finish.
