Trader Joe’s Reserve Lussac Saint-Emilion – A Nice Find

Last Updated on April 23, 2024

Another budget Bordeaux find at Trader Joe’s, this time for only $10. We review the Trader Joe’s Reserve Lussac Saint-Emilion Lot 247.

Trader Joe's Reserve Lussac Saint-Emilion - A Nice Find

A blend of Merlot and most likely Cabernet Franc from Lussac Saint-Emilion in Bordeaux, France.

Hot on the heels of our review of the $17 Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, today we turn to the satellite region of Lussac which is just to the north of Saint-Emilion on the Right Bank.

Using the same grapes (mostly Merlot and Cabernet Franc) but with less strict production requirements and less name recognition, the prices here are not quite as high.

And while it’s much easier to find bargains here, the $9.99 that this one retails for exclusively at Trader Joe’s is still a great price for wines from this region. The label doesn’t give any indication of the producer but the wine is imported by Latitude Wines LLC.

From the bottle:

Lot #247
13.5% Alcohol

The nose on the 2020 Trader Joe’s Reserve Lussac Saint-Emilion Lot 247 is mostly dark fruit but it also has some touches of spice. It’s a bit subdued at first but benefits from some air.

Taking a sip reveals a smooth, nicely balanced wine with more dark fruit and spice. A bit tannic and chewy, this is a really nice, serious, dry, red blend. It tastes a bit on the young side to me, so don’t be afraid to cellar it a bit or give lots of time to breathe.

It ends dry, long and chewy and it might have even been a tad better on day 2 where it developed some additional savory notes.

It’s not quite up to the level of the Grand Cru which has more complexity and secondary notes but there’s absolutely nothing to complain about here for just $10. I really enjoyed this one.
