$9 Nebbiolo? We review the Rosa Dell’Olmo Langhe Nebbiolo from Trader Joe’s made from the famed Piedmont grape.

Trader Joe's Rosa Dell'Olmo Langhe Nebbiolo Review

Nebbiolo from Langhe, Piedmont, Italy. The wine is aged in stainless steel and has around 4 g/L of residual sugar.

The Rosa Dell’Olmo Langhe Nebbiolo is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s in the US and priced at $9.99. It is imported by Latitude Wines.

From the winery:

The Nebbiolo is the most important black grape variety native to Piedmont and is a sensitive and extremely demanding variety in terms of environment, soil, and climate. Harvest takes place in mid-October when the autumn fog (in Italian ‘Nebbia’) envelops the hills: hence the origin of the name is believed to come from here. Vinification is traditional with a 15-day maceration. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in steel where the aromas and intense flavor of the wine are enhanced.

SENSORY FEATURES:
Colour: ruby red with garnet reflections
Bouquet: delicate, characteristic, lightly spicy, with hints of violet and raspberry
Palate: dry, full-bodied, finely tannic, velvety and harmonious.

PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: It pairs perfectly with assorted cured meats, fried foods, flavorful pasta dishes, and cheeses. It’s also ideal with both white and red meats, especially grilled or oven-roasted.

The 2022 Rosa Dell’Olmo Langhe Nebbiolo opens with pleasing aromas of black cherry, leather, violets and a little licorice. It’s a nice, attractive start.

Taking a sip reveals surprising depth, good tannins, plenty of acidity, good structure and similar flavors to the nose. This is a winner for the Italian wine lovers. It would be interesting to see how it evolves after a couple years in the cellar, but it is pretty good right now too.

It ends dry, long and grippy but unfortunately it did not hold up very well on day 2. We’ll put it at the high end of our 7 Taste Rating at 88 points, which is quite respectable for the price, just be sure to either finish it off day 1 or take steps to preserve it.
