Who doesn’t love a big, smooth and velvety Zinfandel with incredible depth?
We sure do and this rare single vineyard example from Oakville in Napa Valley checks all the boxes. From organically grown grapes at the family owned Lincoln Creek Vineyard to the 24 months in French and American oak to the very small production of just 726 cases, this one has it all.
We especially love that the fifth generation growers at Lincoln Creek Vineyard even harvest Zinfandel at all, as it comprises just 1% of the grapes grown in Oakville. That is, of course, because this ultra-prestigious AVA commands such incredible prices for Cabernet Sauvignon that there’s little financial incentive to grow anything but that.
Major kudos to the vineyard and winery (reader favorite Vinum Cellars) for producing a wine of this quality with an SRP of just $35! In fact that SRP is so reasonable that some sellers charge all the way up to $45 a bottle…

My idol and greatest role model is my maternal grandfather who was a lithographer, Typesetter and printer, Joseph Otto Molz, who lived and worked his entire life in Baltimore, MD. I have fond memories of him emerging from the cellar after a long day to clean off his inky hands. I didn’t know then that my career would take me down a similar path. As a red wine winemaker it is my goal to make concentrated, inky dark red wines that stain my hands for weeks at a time. Please enjoy the results of my craft as a tribute to the Typesetter who made it possible.
Vineyard and Winemaking Facts: This certified organic heritage clone Zinfandel vineyard is on the corner of HWY 29 and Yount Mill Road across the street from Paradigm.
Tasting Notes: The deep purple plum color coats the glass with strong viscosity and promises an intense tasting experience. The aromas jump out of the glass as old vine in character with candied violets, concentrated raspberry, earth, all spice and clove notes. On the palate the wine really coats the palate with its velvety texture which slowly releases Tahitian vanilla and rich mocha flavors. The wine finishes silky in texture with generous panoforte spice flavors wrapped with a concentrated raspberry compote and rich vanilla.
Food Pairings: This big Zin is terrific with thick cut cowboy steaks, St. Louis Style Ribs or Greek style spit roasted lamb with cucumber and yogurt.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Typesetter Napa Valley Oakville Zinfandel opens with a classic Zin aroma of brambly fruit, plenty of vanilla, lots of wonderful spice notes and touches of licorice and earth. It’s a very attractive start!
Taking a sip reveals a smooth and velvety wine with incredible depth on the rich, juicy fruit, just as you would expect for premium grapes like this from Oakville. The wine features similar flavors to the nose but they all combine very harmoniously in the mouth. This is a wonderful example of Zinfandel.
It ends dry and very long on the lovely finish. The wine was just as good on day 2. I love it!
