The genesis of this wine starts with the family’s estate vineyards, which have been in the family since 1931:

Discover our stunning 120-acre estate in Alexander Valley, nestled between the Russian River and the Mayacama Mountains. With 100 acres of meticulously farmed land, our vineyard boasts some of the finest varietals in the region. Our iconic Zinfandel vines, spanning 20 acres and dating back to 1905, are meticulously propagated and known as the esteemed “Mazzoni Clone,” a pre-prohibition Heritage Zinfandel clone.

And while the family has farmed these lands for close to a century, the Zialena family label and winery was a more recent dream of brother and sister Mark and Lisa Mazzoni:

With a decade of experience, Mark envisioned creating wines under a family label. In 2012, he co-founded Zialena Winery with his sister, Lisa Mazzoni, focusing on artisanal Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Mark’s decision to commit to concrete fermentation showcased his dedication to innovation. This method, used sparingly in the New World but extensively in parts of the Old World, intrigued him with its potential to enhance wine quality. The launch of Zialena Winery and the buildout of ten permanent concrete fermentation tanks at the heart of the winery, was a realization of Mark’s lifelong dream, rooted in perfecting his family’s legacy vineyards.

Zialena’s winemaking approach is rooted in minimalism and tradition, guided by Mark’s belief in letting the fruit speak for itself with minimal interference. Our estate grapes undergo meticulous hand-sorting before being gently fed by gravity into ten specially crafted concrete tanks, where natural fermentation takes place. We take pride in preserving the integrity of our wines by opting for minimal filtration and fining, allowing them to develop naturally in the barrel. Once bottled, Zialena wines gracefully mature over time, yet are also delightful for immediate enjoyment upon purchase.

The winemaking facility covers 7,000 square feet with a current production of approximately 2,500 cases. The winery includes 10 open top concrete tanks for fermentation, a first for Alexander Valley. A barrel room, wine laboratory, and the winemaker’s blending office surround the concrete tanks and complete the winery. The facility began construction in April 2016 and was completed in February 2017.

The design and concept were the ambitions of Mark and Lisa Mazzoni from their early days walking the vineyard with their grandfather Jim and father, Mike. The dream was for a state of the art facility that could allow for every opportunity to implement the winemaking philosophy and style true to the heritage of their family and the wines they love.

And after tasting these wines, we say mission accomplished!

From the winery:

The 2018 Reserve Zinfandel from Winemaker Mark Mazzoni has a lower juice-to-skin ratio allowing the flavors and color to pull from the skins as the wine ferments in our concrete tanks. The concentration of flavors Mark gets with this Reserve Zinfandel are fabulous. This intentional fermentation technique provides the dense and rich style that Mark looks for when making a Reserve. To balance the richness, this wine is aged in 20% new French Oak providing a whiff of toast to complement the aromas of blue fruit, Italian spices, Brule, marjoram, vanilla, and toffee. A full mouthfeel with black plum, black cherry, fresh oregano, caramel, bacon, and a long finish of pepper lead to well-balanced tannins. Drinking amazing now but an ageable Zinfandel that will hold well in your cellar.

And now on to our review:

The 2018 Zialena Reserve Zinfandel opens with a wonderful aroma of brambly fruit, vanilla, licorice, lovely cloves and other spice notes and much more – this is pure Zin delight! With tons of secondary touches, this is one of those wines that the more you swirl, the more you smell.

Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth, balanced and very well developed with great depth on the fruit. It also has lots of secondary touches just like the nose including black pepper, caramel, lots of spice and much more. This is a lovely example of Zinfandel.

It ends dry, quite long, and grippy on the satisfying finish and was similar on day 2. This is drinking wonderfully right now and probably still has another 5-10 years ahead of it. Excellent!

From the winery:

The richer more dense style of our estate Zinfandel. Mark concentrated the juice by 20% (Releasing 20% of the Juice in the Concrete Tank one day into the fermentation process) and adding 20% new French Oak into his barrel regimen. The nose is rich with blueberry, fresh oregano, white pepper, and a touch of black walnut rounding it out. Immediately a full palate of plum and blueberry fruits come across leading to clove and allspice. The new French oak adds layers to the finish with caramel toast and a hint of vanilla letting the wine linger with pleasure.

And now on to our review:

The 2019 Zialena Reserve Zinfandel opens with a very attractive aroma of black cherry and some other brambly fruit, licorice and spice plus a little cedar, vanilla and white pepper too. It’s a very nice start.

The wine tastes similar to the nose with good balance and pleasing well-integrated spice throughout. Very smooth, this is perhaps a bit more on the elegant side of things compared to the 2018. Both easy to drink and with plenty of complexity, this is another excellent example of Zinfandel.

It ends dry and very long on the lingering finish and was similar on day 2.

Our exclusive partnership with Ermitage Cooperage has given Winemaker Mark Mazzoni specifically chosen barrels for our Estate-Grown Reserve Zinfandel program. The 2020 Reserve Zinfandel levels up with 20% new French Oak barrels, 80% Neutral Oak, aged 18 months. This Zinfandel is layered and inherently complex and it’s just getting started. On the nose, the oak leads to raspberry, toffee, and graphite. Its brooding structure starts on the palate as pluot and fruit compote leading way to candied bacon, charred meat, and a slightly malty finish. An age-worthy wine to enjoy decanted now or many years to come.

And now on to our review:

The 2020 Zialena Reserve Zinfandel opens with a big, strong aroma of dark berry and dried fruit plus lots of licorice and spice. You can tell this is the youngest bottle as it still has plenty of oak influence at this point.

The wine tastes big and oaky on the palate as well but also has tons of depth and similar flavors to the nose. Did we mention it’s quite young? Give this one a few years and watch out! It has plenty of aging potential but will require some time to breathe if drinking now.

It ends dry and long on the grippy finish and was similar on day 2. This is yet another excellent Zinfandel, what a trio we have here today!
