If you've followed Reverse Wine Snob over the last decade you know that we’ve been touting Chenin Blanc from South Africa from the very start. As such we find it interesting most of the world is just now realizing how good South African Chenin Blanc can be.
One of the unique things about the Chenin Blanc being produced in South Africa is their extreme age-ability. As quoted from the article above "If the cork is still intact, the wine will be delicious". (That won't be a problem with today's wine since it uses a screwcap!)
Of course, with this growing renown comes higher prices, which is not a surprise when you're producing Chenin Blanc that can rival the best of the Loire Valley.
As such, the SRP of this wine is $40 although it hasn't had much distribution here in the US. It received a score of 91-92 from VertdeVin (a French wine magazine).
The estate itself harks back to the 1600's and today is owned by "Mr. Chablis" Michel LaRoche and the respected AdVini group which owns acclaimed estates throughout Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rhone Valley and more.

This 100% Chenin Blanc comes from a selection of vineyards on the cooler sites of L’Avenir Estate, including older vineyards of more than 40 years. 60% of the wine was aged in stainless steel tanks while the other 40% was aged in first to third fill French oak barrels for 6-9 months. None of the wine went through malolactic fermentation and it has 13.9% alcohol and just 1.8 g/L of residual sugar.
From the winery:
The majority of the vineyards have reached full maturity, resulting in naturally limited yields of the highest quality grapes. The focus is kept on the vineyards, in order to produce premium quality grapes. Based at the foothills of the Simonsberg mountain range within an area referred to as the “Golden Triangle” of wine. The soil types are varied and include Glenrosa, which is considered to be one of the Cape’s best soil configurations for vines. A vein of disintegrated shale, which is particularly suited to Pinotage vines, runs through the property.
The farm lies in a cleft in the land, so slopes face in every direction, creating a natural diversity of styles. Driven by their terroir and enhanced by international collaboration, the wines showcase the best of both the New & Old World.
The 2016 L'Avenir Chenin Blanc begins with an attractive aroma of pear, apple, melon, some nice touches of spice and even a bit of stony minerality.
Taking a sip reveals juicy and fresh tasting fruit wrapped up in a smooth, unctuous mouthfeel. This is really quite tasty! It features similar flavors to the nose but with more pronounced spice in the mouth. And while it is quite dry at just 1.8 g/L of residual sugar, it is very full of flavor.
It ends dry and long. This is a great example of South African Chenin Blanc, with a bit of age on it, at an incredible price. And it still has plenty of peak drinking ahead of it as well.
