A classic and quite tasty example of Shiraz at a great Aldi price, we review the Specially Selected Barossa Valley Shiraz.
98.4% Shiraz and 1.6% Cabernet Sauvignon from Barossa Valley, South Australia. It is aged 12 months with a portion of the wine in oak.
Today we’re checking out another wine in the new Specially Selected label available at Aldi, this time from Australia. (As a reminder, we’ve also reviewed the Specially Selected Rioja Reserva, the Specially Selected Uco Valley Malbec and the Specially Selected Napa Valley Cabernet.)
The Specially Selected Barossa Shiraz is available exclusively at Aldi and sells for $9.99. It is imported by Mack & Schuhle.
From the bottle:
A deep crimson red wine with rich flavors. Notes of ripe blue fruit and berry on the nose are complemented by a soft, full palate, with spiced plum and blueberry aromas.
Style: Soft and Full
Flavors: Plum and Blueberries
Pairs With: Red Meats and Cheese14.5% Alcohol
The 2021 Specially Selected Barossa Valley Shiraz opens with attractive aromas of ripe dark fruit like mulberries and blackberry along with plenty of licorice, some peppery spice and a little vanilla. It’s a pretty classic start and quite nice.
Taking a sip reveals a smooth, tasty, well balanced and dry wine featuring similar flavors to the nose. Again, this is just a really nice example of Shiraz. I have to say I’m kind of impressed!
It ends dry and long and it might even be a bit better on day 2 where it paired admirably with my pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato fries.
