Aldi Specially Selected Uco Valley Malbec Review

Malbec from a single vineyard in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina. It does not appear to spend any time in oak.

Today we’re checking out the new vintage of a wine in the Specially Selected label available at Aldi, this time from Argentina. (As a reminder, we’ve previously reviewed the Specially Selected Rioja Reserva, the Specially Selected Barossa Shiraz and the Specially Selected Napa Valley Cabernet, among other reds.)

The Specially Selected Uco Valley Malbec is available exclusively at Aldi and sells for just $7.99. It is imported by Pampa Beverages, LLC. Interestingly, it is made for Aldi by Belhara Estate who also produce their own line of wines that have scored well as well as the single vineyard Belhara Estate Malbec produced for Trader Joe’s.

From the bottle:

This single vineyard Malbec was handpicked from the high altitudes and cool weather of the prestigious Valle de Uco. This exceptional terroir provides to this expressive Malbec bold and fresh fruit characters, with hints of spices and floral notes.

Style: Bold and fruit forward
Flavors: Fresh black and red fruit, with a long and supple finish
Pairing: Grilled meat as well as hearty pasta dishes

The 2024 Specially Selected Uco Valley Malbec opens with aromas of fresh tart black cherry, cranberry and touches of mulberry, violets and spice. It’s simple, but attractive.

Tasting reveals more dark and juicy fruit that is ripe and quite tart in the mouth. It doesn’t really have a lot more going on than that but it does have good depth and it’s nice and dry, so it’s still pretty satisfying.

It ends with decent length and a touch of grippiness on the dry finish. It also held up just fine on day 2 where it tasted very similar. This is certainly good enough for the price, but if you have the choice we prefer the Trader Joe’s Belhara Estate Malbec at $1 more.
