The Best Wines at Sam's Club

Sam's Club and Costco are the two biggest membership clubs in the US, offering many similar types of products and services - including wine. But while Costco's wine assortment, including their Kirkland Signature wines, get a ton of press, you don't hear nearly as much about Sam's Club and their Member's Mark line.

It turns out that while the Member's Mark wine assortment left much to be desired in the past, Sam's Club has increased their range notably in the last few years and now offer quite a varied and interesting assortment, including many of the same regions and varieties as Costco in their Kirkland Signature line.

Sam's Club's Member's Mark line offers a good selection of red, white, rosé and sparkling wines like a Rioja Reserva, Asolo Prosecco, Champagne, Old Vine Zinfandel, Mendoza Malbec, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and a number of Napa Valley Cabernets from the various, more prestigious, sub-appellations.

Many of the more exclusive offerings are branded as Member's Mark "Private Reserve", so those are certainly labels to seek out.

Just like Costco, Sams Club also offers a small assortment of other non-private label wines, which from our experience is not quite as varied as Costco and focus more on the big, widely available brands at a very low price.

Thanks to its membership model and fees, Sam's takes smaller margins than most traditional retailers, giving them very competitive prices. Most, if not all, of the wine in the store is priced under $25, right in our sweet spot.

The other nice thing about Sam's Club is that they do not restrict alcohol sales to non-members regardless of the state. Anyone can purchase alcohol at Sam's (although you actually have to go into the store to buy it, you can't do curbside or delivery). This is unlike Costco where alcohol sales are only available to members unless you are in a handful of states that have laws against this (AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IN, KY, MA, MI, MN, NY, TX, and VT).
