An easy drinker at an even easier price. We review the Bota Box Old Vine Zinfandel 3L boxed wine.
Old Vine (although there’s no clarifier on how old) Zinfandel from California.
A new pick for our box wine list? We’ve found the Bota Box wines to be a bit hit and miss as many of them tend to be sweeter than we prefer but old vine Zin certainly sounds promising, so let’s check it out.
Sample submitted for review. The Bota Box Old Vine Zinfandel has an SRP of $23 and is available for as low as $15, which makes this 3L box the equivalent of $3.75 per regular 750ml bottle.
From the box:
Bota Box Zinfandel is round and full of vigor, with rich aromas of raspberry, black pepper, and plum, balanced by flavors of blackberry and toasty sage. This deep, fruit forward wine is perfect to toast with good friends around the fire pit.
13.5% Alcohol

The Bota Box Old Vine Zinfandel opens with a pleasing aroma of black cherry, licorice and hints of vanilla and spice. It’s not a bad start.
The wine tastes soft, smooth and a bit sweet and while it does have a bit of Zin-like character on the nose, it loses most of it in the mouth and tastes more like a red blend. With dark berry fruit and some spice it’s still a well-made wine though that’s easy to drink, which is enough at this low price point.
It ends mostly dry and with a little spice on the medium length finish. It’s not distinctively old vine or even very Zin-like, but just like the Bota Box Chardonnay we previously reviewed, it’s just good enough given its very low price.
