Exploring the fresh and fruity side of Piedmont, we review the Specially Selected Gavi DOCG from Aldi.

Aldi Specially Selected Gavi DOCG - Crisp, Bright and Inviting

100% Cortese from the Gavi DOCG in southern Piedmont, Italy.

Most of the talk about the Piedmont region in Italy centers around Barolo, and with good reason. Today we’re going to take a look at the fresh, fruity and floral side of Piedmont white wines, with an unexpected find from Aldi.

The Specially Selected Gavi DOCG is available exclusively at Aldi and sells for just $9.99. It is imported by Prestige Beverage Group.

From the bottle:

DOCG Gavi is one of Piedmont’s most well-known wine regions, producing some of Italy’s best wines. This dry white wine is crisp and fresh with floral aromas and green apple and citrus fruit flavors. Enjoy chilled with seafood, pasta, and salads.

12.5% Alcohol

The Gavi wine region gets its name from the town of Gavi which lies at the center of the appellation. Producing exclusively white wines made from the Cortese grape (still and sparkling), this variety has been grown here since at least the 1600s and it remains almost exclusively from this area today.

Known for it’s fresh, fruity and floral character, Cortese is a variety that most US consumers are not familiar with but don’t be afraid to give it a try. Major kudos to Aldi for making it widely available at a great price. Now let’s check out how it tastes.

The 2022 Specially Selected Gavi DOCG opens with a bright, inviting aroma full of lemon and other citrus plus some lovely honeysuckle notes. It smells great!

And it’s really delicious in the mouth as well where it is still fresh, bright and full of flavor with good structure and balance while remaining dry. The fruit also turns a bit more tart with more green apple flavors coming to the front.

It ends crisp, dry and long with lots of lingering tart fruit and a hint of minerality. This is an excellent example of the variety and also an excellent changeup from your usual whites. Highly Recommended!
