While many growers would be tempted to replant this superb site with Nebbiolo to make (more expensive) Barolo, Enzo loves the brooding, exotic, finely textured Barbera fruit Roscaleto produces each year.

Enzo Boglietti established his winery in 1991 in the heart of La Morra after growing up farming grapes, tending dairy cows and making fine cheeses with his father. Since then his holdings have grown to include 50 acres of single vineyard sites scattered across the Langhe.

Enzo might well be the most open minded, progressive grower/vintner you’ll come across in Piemonte – Visit his winery during harvest and you will find new experiments around each corner, with carefully marked lots bubbling away in every vessel imaginable, from botti, to foudre, to concrete egg, to barrique.

Intense bouquet of ripe black fruit with mineral, spicy notes. Already harmonic, with generous fruit, ripe tannins and good acidity that contribute to a very pleasant and long aftertaste.

The 2017 Enzo Boglietti Roscaleto Barbera d’Alba opens with deep and succulent aromas of ripe, dark berry fruit with lots of wonderful spicy touches, licorice, cedar, mint and much more. This one sucks you right into the glass and once you’re there it’s extremely difficult to get your nose out of it, that is until you take your first sip.

Tasting reveals the wine to be deep, rich, juicy, spicy and amazingly delicious. I love, love, love this. It’s a fantastic example of Barbera. Smooth and velvety with so many different layers, it features similar flavors to the nose with all those same touches reappearing very cohesively.

It ends dry, juicy, dynamic, spicy, savory, a bit grippy and extremely long and was just as good on day 2.

The 2018 Enzo Boglietti Roscaleto Barbera d’Alba opens in a similar fashion to the 2017 with perhaps a touch less fruit and spice but also the addition of a bit of a nutty note as well. It’s another fabulous start.

Tasting a bit younger the 2017, I’d recommend giving this one plenty of air to see it fully blossom. We liked the 2017 a bit better on day 1 but by day 2, the 2018 was just as good with similar notes.

Overall the 2017 is a bit splashier, but we found the 2018 to be a perhaps a bit more balanced with some additional earthiness. They’re both fantastic and offer a fascinating exploration of vintage variation.
