Does high altitude matter? We explain in our review of this tasty little Malbec, the Dona Paula Estate High Altitude Malbec.
100% Malbec from the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina.
90% of the grapes come from Finca Alluvia in Gualtallary, Tupungato at an altitude of 4,430 feet above sea level and 10% come from Finca Los Indios in El Cepillo, San Carlos at an altitude of 3,610 feet. The wine is aged in first, second and third-use French oak barrels for 12 months and has just 2.5 g/L of residual sugar. It is also vegan friendly.
If you’ve been drinking Malbec for a while, one of the trends you may have noticed recently is the labeling of many of these as “high altitude” or “high elevation”. One reason is of course that many of these wines are produced near the Andes, so high altitude is somewhat easy to find. There’s also the fact that these terms seem to have become popular with consumers, which encourages more wineries to use it.
There are, however, a lot of other more important reasons behind it, one of them being global warming. In other words, this is not a trend that is going away but a reality for wineries in many areas. You can find out all the details on in our Ask The Expert article on how high altitude affects winegrowing, “The Skinny on High Altitude“.
Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $15 and is available for as low as $12. It is imported by Prestige Beverage Group.
