We’ve said this many times before but we are huge fans of wines from Lake County, located just to the north of Napa Valley. And the High Valley AVA within larger Lake County is a very special spot:
The High Valley AVA rises between 1,600 and 3,000 ft. elevation in the Coastal Ranges of northeastern Lake County. Thanks to the high elevation and cool breezes from the oldest lake in North America, it is one of the coolest appellations in Lake County. We run 1,000 head of sheep on these vineyards, composting the weeds into nutrients for the red, rocky volcanic soils. These are intensely flavored grapes, and we craft them into wines that capture the character of this remarkable region.
The high elevation and cool breezes also contribute to huge diurnal shifts (up to a 50 degree swing within a single day!), allowing the grapes to maintain high acidity while they slowly ripen over an extended growing period. Add in those wonderful volcanic soils and you have a remarkable combination.

Our single vineyard collection is fruit from Betsy Vineyard, located in the High Valley AVA on Home Ranch. This North slope, 75 acre vineyard is named in honor of Clay’s mother.
In this blend, the Zinfandel, Syrah, and Nero D’Avola give it ripe fruit, while Petite Sirah contribute body and structure, and the Cab Franc some spicy notes. It was aged in French oak barrels for 12 months to develop complexity.
This is a wine of an intense violet color, with sweet notes of caramel, vanilla, white chocolate and coconut, along with good ripe fruit such as plum and blackberry.
An elegant wine in the mouth, ready to be enjoyed in good company.

The 2019 High Valley Vineyard Red Blend opens with a very pleasing, multi-faceted aroma of ripe blackberry, black cherry, plum and lots of other assorted berry fruit plus warm baking spice, licorice and touches of vanilla, caramel and mocha. There’s a lot going on but it’s quite cohesive. It’s a great start.
Taking a sip reveals a big and rich wine with a smooth mouthfeel. All of those same flavors from the nose are also featured when tasting. Wow, this is quite a tasty and unique blend of varieties! I especially love the addition of the Sicilian grape, Nero d’Avola, to the blend as it works wonderfully with the Zinfandel.
Continued touches of well-integrated spice lead into the dry, grippy and long finish. After a couple hours of air you’ll also find a nice savory element and some additional depth so you might want to decant this one or just open the bottle early. It was even a bit better on day 2.
