Field-driven blending and co-fermentation are at the core of every bottle. Our small-lot blends showcase grapes from notable but often overlooked vineyards—bringing together the best of Sonoma and beyond. Unique partnerships allow us to explore how different varietals work together, accentuating each other’s best characteristics to create wines as richly layered as they are approachable.

In a world and industry so measured and so exact, we’ve chosen to embrace the beauty and nuance in imperfection. In short, we’re taking a turn off the beaten path, journeying far from the expected, and exploring fantastic new blends, and embracing new and old-world winemaking techniques.

Included in today’s 4-pack deal are:

• The 2022 Abbot’s Passage Spirit Rock Red Blend, a blend of 32% Cinsault, 30% Mourvedre, 28% Grenache and 10% Counoise from the acclaimed Alder Springs Vineyard in Mendocino County. It is aged for 9 months in two and three times used French Oak and just 423 cases were produced. The wine normally retails for $60 a bottle. You will receive two bottles.
• The 2021 Abbot’s Passage Tri Point Syrah, a Côte-Rôtie style co-fermented blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier from the Sonoma Coast. Just 599 cases were produced. The wine normally retails for $45 a bottle. You will receive two bottles.

Up first, let’s take a look at the 2022 Abbot’s Passage Spirit Rock. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.

From the winery:

Inspired by the practice found in Buddhism called vipassana, which translates to “insight”, the 2022 Spirit Rock exhibits notes of pomegranate, hibiscus and finishing with peach tea, leaving a refreshing and lingering impression.

blend: 32% Cinsault, 10% Counoise, 28% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre
vineyard designation: Alder Springs Vineyard, Mendocino County
soil profile: Gravelly loam decomposed sandstone and Casabone Wholly
production: 423 cases

wine notes: 10% whole cluster pressed (Grenache Portion), in a combination of stainless steel and puncheon fermenters. Aged for 9 months in a combination of twice and three times used French Oak Burgundy Barrels and puncheons.

This growing season at the vineyard site, we had a terrible issue with bears eating too many Counoise grapes (we don’t blame them), so the blend is a bit different from our 2021 vintage. 10% whole cluster pressed (Grenache Portion), in a combination of stainless steel and puncheon fermenters. Aged for 9 months in a combination of twice and three times used French Oak Burgundy Barrels and puncheons. Delicate, aromatic and refined, this wine exudes its hallmark notes of pomegranate and hibiscus and finally finishing with peach tea, leaving a refreshing and lingering impression

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Abbot’s Passage Spirit Rock opens with a lovely, harmonious and quite aromatic nose of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, peach, pomegranate and white pepper. It’s a great start!

Tasting reveals a smooth, lighter bodied, refreshing, Rhone-style blend with similar flavors to the nose. It’s a lovely mix of varietals that gets even better with air. Delicious anytime, this would be perfect for a picnic as it will make a great summertime red.

It ends dry, long, fresh and savory and was even a bit more balanced and harmonious on day two. This is fantastic, stock up!

Next, let’s take a look at the 2021 Abbot’s Passage TriPoint. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.

From the winery:

Tripoint pays homage to the first vineyard we sourced our grapes for this wine where there was an overlook of three peaks and also speaks to elements coming together and our roots of co-fermentation.

vineyard designation: Sonoma Coast
soil profile: Volcanic Clay-Loam
production: 599 cases

wine notes: This aromatic wine is a medium to full-bodied delight, with a captivating hue reminiscent of vibrant fuchsia. The nose is filled with enticing aromas of fresh rose hips, enticingly floral and fragrant, reminiscent of a garden in full bloom.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Abbot’s Passage Tri Point Syrah opens with a wonderful aroma of dark fruit, licorice, spice, floral notes and a bit of smoked meat.

The wine tastes smooth and features similar flavors to the nose with good depth and vibrancy. This is a great example of the variety. And just like the wines of Côte-Rôtie (where Viognier is required to be co-fermented with Syrah if it is used) this one benefits from the added fragrance, body and texture of the co-fermentation.

It ends dry, savory and quite long on the satisfying finish and was just as good on day two.
