• Pinot Noir, and the 2021 Oceano Spanish Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir is an exceptional one from the westernmost (closest to the Pacific Ocean) vineyard in the US. It received 93 points from Jed Dunnuck and 93+ points from Jancis Robinson and we gave it a Perfect 10 (94+ point) Taste Rating. Just 597 cases were produced. This wine has a SRP of $45 but the few retailers we could find actually sell it for more – an average of $54 on wine-searcher.
• Old vine, organically and dry farmed Zinfandel from the Kazmet Vineyard in Redwood Valley, aged 18 months in French oak (20% new). From reader favorite Handley Cellars, just 570 cases were produced of the 2018 Handley Kazmet Vineyard Zinfandel. Wine Enthusiast gives it 92-Points and we score it similarly. It normally retails for $32 a bottle.
• Rosé is one of our very favorite food-friendly picks and this balanced, smooth, deep and delicious example is made from another of our favorite food friendly varieties, Grenache. Dry (no residual sugar) but not lacking in flavor, we give the single vineyard 2022 Brick Barn Grenache Rosé 91-93 points. It normally retails for $30.
• And finally, we’ve got an exceptionally delicious and food friendly Viognier from the highly acclaimed Miner Family Winery and the Steinbeck Vineyard in Paso Robles. Harmonious, vibrant and with great concentration, the 2021 Miner Paso Robles Viognier is perennial favorite in our deals. Normally priced quite reasonably at $25, we give it 91-93 points.

Let’s take a look at each wine. Up first we’ve got the 2021 Oceano Spanish Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir. You will receive one bottle.

From the winery:

Vintage Summary: The 2021 growing season was characterized by a cool growing season and only one heat spike in mid-June. The lack of heat events and moderate, cool weather in September and October made the window of opportunity much longer for picking at optimal grape maturity. Due to the cool growing season, 2021 was one of the latest harvests in recent memory. Yields were average to above average in size. Long hang time on the vines resulted in concentrated flavors and above average acidity — especially for Pinot Noir — and quality is outstanding.

Tasting Notes: Garnet in color with crystal clarity. A perfumed nose of fresh plum, strawberry pate du fruit, cranberry, bing cherry, violets, vanilla, and sweet earth. A raspberry attack leads to a layered mouth of pomegranate, red currant, red plum, anise and hints of cocoa. Firm but elegant tannins give way to a long pomegranate and cherry finish.

And now on to our review:

The 2021 Oceano Spanish Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir opens with a wonderful aroma of strawberry, black cherry, cranberry, raspberry and mulberry plus touches of minty, peppery herbs, flowers and more. It needs a little time to breathe, but it’s a fantastic start.

Taking a sip reveals a balanced and elegant wine with some tangy acidity and similar flavors to the nose. Complex and layered, the wine is also smooth and soft with almost no tannins. While it does need a little air, it just keeps on getting better and better the longer it is open and has a lot of aging potential (10+ years).

It ends dry and extremely long with a little bit of sea salt minerality underneath the lasting flavors. This is definitely a wine to sip slowly and ponder, as it takes some time to get through the many different layers. It might have been even a bit better on day 2. I recommend popping this open the morning you want to drink it.

Next we’ve got the 2018 Handley Kazmet Vineyard Zinfandel. You will receive one bottle.

From the winery:

The head-pruned vines from Kazmet Ranch, CCOF Organic Certified, are dry farmed, providing concentrated old vine flavors. This wine has jammy aromas of blackberry pie with undertones of sage and green peppercorn. It exhibits flavors of brambly berry, dark plum, and peach with notes of licorice and sandalwood. Medium-bodied, rich and round in the mouth with noticeable acidity focusing the persistent fruit on the finish. A small addition of Petite Sirah (10%) adds a little tannin structure and complexity to the blend. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (20% new).

And now on to our review:

The 2018 Handley Kazmet Vineyard Zinfandel has a lot going on as you sniff and swirl with pleasing, ripe, dark berry fruit plus some intriguing sage and fennel notes along with black licorice, pencil shavings, vanilla, chocolate and more. It’s a fabulous start.

Tasting the medium-bodied wine reveals a smooth and round mouthfeel, good structure and acidity, excellent complexity and similar flavors to the nose. This one also has a lot of different layers to discover and it keeps getting better with air so take your time and savor it.

It ends dry, quite long and savory on the mouth-puckering finish. While it’s distinctly Zinfandel, it also has a lot of unique aromas and flavors adding intrigue. It was just as good on day 2 where it’s even a bit more savory and has some additional licorice notes. This is another excellent wine from Handley Cellars.

Next we’ve got the 2022 Brick Barn Grenache Rosé. You will receive one bottle.

The 2022 Grenache Rosé reveals a beautiful salmon-pink hue with hints of peach and orange. Upon swirling the glass, the wine releases a captivating bouquet of fresh summer fruits. Vibrant aromas of ripe strawberries and juicy watermelon dominate the nose, exuding a sense of sweetness, though the wine is classified as dry. Delicate floral notes, like rose petals and hibiscus, add an enchanting touch, further enhancing the wine’s aromatic complexity.

With its expressive fruitiness and impeccable balance, this Rosé is a testament to why we believe the best Rosés are made from Grenache. It’s the perfect wine, pairing beautifully with a wide range of dishes or simply enjoyed on its own.

Nestled within the picturesque landscape of Monterey County, the ideal grape growing conditions for Grenache thrive in a harmonious convergence of cool coastal influences and sun-kissed vineyard sites. The region’s maritime climate, characterized by brisk ocean breezes and foggy mornings, imparts a distinctive crispness and vibrant acidity to the grapes, while the sun-drenched afternoons allow for gradual ripening, resulting in expressive aromatics and a balanced flavor profile. This exquisite interplay of climate and terroir shapes each cluster, culminating in a Rosé that is the unique essence of Monterey County.

Food Pairings
Grilled Chicken or Turkey: Lightly seasoned grilled poultry, perhaps with a side of roasted vegetables, allows the wine’s fruity flavors to shine.
Charcuterie Board: Include mild cheeses like Brie or fresh goat cheese, cured meats like prosciutto, and fresh fruit like melon or berries to match the wine’s fruity profile.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Brick Barn Grenache Rosé begins with a fresh, attractive aroma of citrus, peach, apricot, watermelon, strawberry and more summer fruits with a little bit of honeysuckle as well. It’s a great start!

Taking a sip reveals a balanced, smooth, deep and flavorful wine with good acidity and good structure. Fresh and bright, it features similar flavors to the nose with juicy fruit in the mouth. It’s great on its own, but it’s also very food friendly. It’s just as good when it warms up too.

It ends dry and long on the lip-smacking and very satisfying finish. This is a delicious and lovely example of rosé!

And finally, rounding out today’s 4-pack we’ve got the 2021 Miner Paso Robles Viognier. You will receive one bottle.

Aromatically complex with citrus and honeysuckle notes on the nose and a plush feel on the palate, our Viognier consistently displays a fine balance of neutral acidity and intense concentration.

This quintessential food wine was whole cluster pressed and stainless steel fermented to allow the vibrant, tropical and stone fruit characteristics of this varietal to shine.

Miner is a dynamic family-owned winery tucked along the eastern hills of the Oakville appellation in the heart of Napa Valley. And now on to our review:

The 2021 Miner Paso Robles Viognier opens with quite an engaging and aromatic bouquet just as you would expect with this variety. Full of honeysuckle, melon, lemongrass, a little pineapple, a little pear and a bit of lemon cream, there is lots to discover as you swirl and sniff.

Tasting the wine reveals a soft, smooth, round and almost creamy but still lively and vibrant texture with a little minerality underneath. Very fresh and easy to drink, the wine features similar flavors to the nose that combine quite harmoniously in the mouth. Great depth and concentration lead to lots of well developed flavors in this dry wine.

It ends dry, long, tangy and delicious. This is highly satisfying!
