91-93 points and just 224 cases produced! Reminiscent of the best of Rueda, we’ve got a special white wine today at an incredible price, the 2022 Bokisch Verdejo.
We’ve long been fans of Bokisch Vineyards after a visit there almost a decade ago. We’re delighted to finally (finally!) be able to bring you one of their excellent wines.
Founded and run by Markus and Liz Bokisch, the winery focuses on Iberian varietals like Albarino, Tempranillo, Graciano, Verdejo and Verdelho. The love for these Spanish varieties comes from Markus’ time spent visiting his mother’s family in Spain every summer as he grew up plus several years of the two of them traveling Spain in a 1967 blue VW Bus.
And while many scoffed at the idea of growing these grapes in Lodi, the couple persevered and started with 20 acres in 1995 (their Terra Alta Vineyards property in the Clements Hills), even importing budwood from specially selected vineyards in Spain. They now farm 2,500 acres and sell grapes to over 60 wineries.
Today we have an excellent example of Verdejo, made famous by the white wines of the Rueda region in Spain. (And in fact, Markus uses Rueda clone Verdejo in this wine.) Balanced by 4% Alabarino, both varieties come from the Mediterranean climate of the Clay Station Vineyard in the Borden Ranch AVA in Lodi near the Sierra Foothills. The wine is fermented and aged in neutral French oak for 4 months.
Delicious and extremely satisfying, this extremely small production wine (just 224 cases were produced) has a very reasonable SRP of $29. However, in true Insider Deal style, we’re cutting that price in half for the next day!

This skin contacted white wine features a bright hay color with flecks of sea green as it moves in your glass. It has bright aromas of jasmine, honeydew melon, agave and unripe pineapple. It has weighty and tropical flavors of mango, fresh navel orange juice, citrus soda and white peach. It has a long and unctuous finish!
Liz suggests pairing this with Pad Thai noodles and kung pao chicken.
The steep rolling hills of Clay Station, the most ancient soils that Bokisch Vineyards farms are over 450,000 years old. The earth here is depleted of nutrients and organic matter, which serves well to control the inherent vigor of Verdejo. We found this is a perfect location for whites and reds. Our Verdejo thrives in the soils along with Malbec and Petite Sirah.

And now on to our review:
The 2022 Bokisch Verdejo opens with a very attractive aroma of lemon, lime, tropical fruit, honeydew melon, a little peach, some enticing floral notes and more. You can tell right away that you’re in for something special.
Taking a sip reveals wonderful balance and loads of flavor with lots of sweet tasting fruit in this dry, medium-bodied wine. It features similar flavors to the nose plus a smooth and silky mouthfeel. Super easy to drink and very satisfying, we love this! It will also pair great with lots of different foods including spicy ones.
It ends dry, quite long and delicious. Stock up!
