Our Big Reds 4-Pack begins with two bottles of the 2020 Denier-Handal Family Blend, a mix of Cabernet Franc, Dolcetto, Malbec, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah aged 25 months in new and neutral American and French Barrels. 75% of these grapes are organically grown and dry farmed on soils of rocky, medium clay. Just 240 cases were produced.

The Family Blend is made to honor the men and women who harvest the winery’s fruit and it is a deliciously fitting tribute. Big, chewy and fun to drink, you’ll be getting it at giant discount through today’s deal.

The other half of today’s 4-Pack is a very special treat, the 2018 Denier-Handal Sagrantino! You will receive two bottles.

Sagrantino is our very favorite variety. Primarily found around Montefalco in Umbria, Italy, we unfortunately don’t see a lot of the very expensive Sagrantino di Montefalco here in the US because the production isn’t huge and most of it gets consumed before it can ever be exported. (The Italians apparently know a good thing when they taste it.)

The variety has been around and very well respected for hundreds of years, in fact, even the Roman author Pliny The Elder mentioned the red wines of Montefalco (that many suspect were Sagrantino) in the first century!

It has one of the highest tannic levels of any grape variety, which is why a little bit goes a long way like in our very popular Messenger Cabernet deal which was 95% Cabernet and just 5% Sagrantino.

But single variety bottlings can also be simply stunning when done well and today we have a fantastic example that was aged 22 months in French and American oak. It comes from the Denier-Handal estate vineyard in Dry Creek Valley and normally retails for $40.

Harvest Notes: 2020 Family Blend is a wine made with fruit from some of our favorite vineyards in California. In the mix is Sangiovese and Petite Sirah from the Venturi Family vineyard in Mendocino County, Malbec from Hopland area, Dolcetto from Russian River, and Cabernet Franc from Dry Creek Valley. The varied characteristics in the fruit shows well in this blend that represents our love of making wine.

Tasting notes: Our family blend has a beautiful ruby color that shows nicely in your glass. The blend has a beautiful aroma of light spice, blackberries and cooked plum. We get flavors of cooked fruit, berries, spice and earth. The wine is great paired with light to hearty fare. From ratatouille to pork sugo.

Varietals: Proprietary blend of Cabernet Franc, Dolcetto, Malbec, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah

And now on to our review:

The 2020 Denier-Handal Family Blend smells like a barrel room, with a pleasing aroma of vanilla, cedar, dark berry fruit and touches of baking spice. It’s a great start.

The wine tastes delicious after it has some air. Thick and tannic with more dark berry fruit it also features a smooth mouthfeel. It’s definitely an interesting mix of varieties but it works very well especially if you like bigger wines.

It ends dry, chewy and very, very long. This wine is still tasting quite young so be sure to give it plenty of air. By day 2 it was really singing! The tannins, while still prominent, lessened a bit, the spice was very well integrated and the wine was even more harmonious and deliciously explosive.

If you like big, chewy and delicious wines this one is for you.

TASTING NOTES: On the nose one may find aromas of caramel, toffee, dried fig and dried cherry that evolve on the palate into flavors of red cherry/strawberry fruit, burnt brown sugar and chewy chalky tannins that persist on the palate, showing this varietal’s characteristic balance between opulence and austerity. Our 2018 Sagrantino is dry and rich in the mouth, elegant, tannic, tangy and fruity making it a great food wine, pairing well with prosciutto, sausage, pastas, biscotti and sweet pastries. Salute!

And now on to our review:

The 2018 Denier-Handal Sagrantino is another young wine that needs some time to open up. Once it does, it features a really savory, succulent aroma of black cherry, spice, cinnamon, a little anise, cedar, licorice, some floral notes and lots of other touches as you sniff and swirl. It’s a fantastic start.

Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth, tannic and delicious! With similar flavors to the nose and plenty of big tannins (which we love), this is not for the light of heart. Luckily at 7 years of age the tannins are starting to lessen and smooth out a bit making this a pretty approachable example of Sagrantino for those new to the variety.

It just kept getting better the longer it was open. And as good as it is now I’m guessing it’s got another 3-4 years to go before it hits its peak and plenty of prime drinking years after that.

It ends long, dry and very grippy on the harmonious finish and it was even better on day 2.
