The 2020 vintage we have on offer comes from Michel-Schlumberger winery in the Dry Creek Valley (who are still selling the 2019 vintage on their website). Just 224 cases were produced.
Here’s a bit more about this classic winery:
Michel-Schlumberger’s first vines were planted in 1979 by Jean-Jacques Michel, a native of Switzerland. Michel traveled extensively across Northern California in search of the perfect location to establish his winery. He quickly recognized the potential of the Dry Creek Valley climate and soils and saw the contoured exposures of Wine Creek Canyon, in particular, as ideal for creating unique flavors.
In 1991, Jacques Pierre Schlumberger joined the winery team, bringing with him a legacy of over 400 years of winemaking in Alsace, France.
It was at this point that the Michel-Schlumberger brand was born. Over the years, the winery’s exceptional wines and the beauty of its estate have garnered global attention and acclaim.
Michel-Schlumberger’s vineyards stretch across the rolling hills, with Wine Creek quietly flowing along the front of the Estate. The property boasts more than 61 acres of prime benchland vineyards—long, narrow strips of level land bordered by steeper slopes above and below, renowned for producing healthy, high-quality grapes. Our viticultural team goes to great lengths to maximize the Estate’s natural advantages, carefully spacing and trellising to specific elevations to highlight the unique characteristics of each site. The distinct combination of benchland and hillside terroir, along with specially selected clones, allows us to create wines that are elegant in style yet confidently Californian.
While we focus on our signature varietals—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay—more than 15 varietals are grown on the Estate. Located just 17 miles from the Pacific Ocean, our vineyard blocks benefit from a subtle oceanic influence, ensuring even ripening.

2020 Michel-Schlumberger Platinum Collection Chardonnay
Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma CountyThe Vineyard: Our benchland and mountain-top soils combine with vigor-limiting rootstock to yield intense fruit flavors from smaller berries. For this PLATINUM COLLECTION Chardonnay, we selected seven barrels from our benchland block of Robert Young clone (rich, lush fruit), and three barrels from our mountain-top block of clone 76 (bright on the palate, complex flavor, elegant structure).
Fermentation: The grapes were picked in the cool mornings and immediately pressed. After settling, the clear juice was racked into French oak barrels and fermented at a cool temperature to retain fresh fruit flavors while gaining roundness during barrel fermentation. 50% malo-lactic fermentation adds richness and depth while retaining brightness in this wine.
Cooperage / Aging: The wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. Ten individual barrels (3 new, 7 one year old) were selected to create the optimum blend.

And now on to our review:
The 2020 Michel-Schlumberger Platinum Collection Chardonnay opens with a very pleasing aroma of citrus, pear, a little spice and a touch of a buttery note but lots of other little touches also come out with time in the glass. Swirl and sniff away!
The wine tastes rich, juicy, and just a bit oaky and buttery but also fresh and lively. It also features a smooth, substantial mouthfeel. In the mouth the fruit is a bit more tart with some light tropical fruit notes but otherwise all the same notes from the nose also appear when tasting.
It ends dry, quite long and lingering with lots of lasting oaky, slightly buttery notes under the fruit on the mouthwatering finish. Stock up Chardonnay fans!

A well balanced Chardonnay that I prefer to the $65 Napa Valley Chardonnay from a top producer I had recently. The balance of fruit and oak is spot on in my opinion.
What a treat! From the opening aroma to the smooth finish it was more than I imagined and my wife and I loved the buttery oaken flavor. Would have purchased a case if I could’ve but was sold out when I tried to buy. My bad, but what a great treat with our shrimp and crab “stew” over puff pastry shells. Thanks for the opportunity to partake in this delicious wine. 🍷
Absolutely fabulous Chardonnay. Fits my palate perfectly. A tinge of butter and oak but nothing over the top. Very well balanced in my opinion. Great with chicken or seafood. I had it with a garlic shrimp pasta dish tonight and it was spot on.
