HARVEST 2019: A Vintage which was rated as Excellent by the DOCa Rioja Control Board, a classification which had not been granted since 2011. The amount of rainfall between the autumn of 2018 and the spring of 2019 was low, well below the average annual rainfall throughout the appellation. Even from early summer they were announcing that we could be in for an exceptional year. In addition, the months of August and September were dry, with high daytime and cold night time temperatures which allowed the grapes to be harvested in ideal conditions and with a very healthy crop.

PRODUCTION: Predominantly Tempranillo sourced from several selected vineyard parcels in and around Quel, including: El Poeta, La Bartola and Hoyo Judio. All are at altitudes above 600m – low yielding vines which receive no artificial irrigation. Many are plots of old bush vines. After three different stages of selection – in the vineyard, at the winery, and a final selection of the berries after de-stemming – there is a period of pre-fermentation maceration for 5 days, followed by a further 18 day maceration at 22- 26ºC. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. Vinification takes place at a new, gravity-fed winery in the centre of Quel with the most up-to-date technology. The finished wine spends 18 months in new oak barrels (80% French and 20% American) with varying levels of toast. After a further 6 months in large (18,000L) French oak foudres, the wine is stored in the winery’s calado (underground cellar) before release.

TASTING NOTES: Color – Luminous, radiant, with high color intensity. Displays a black cherry hue with glints that range from shades of ruby to purple nuances at the rim.

Pronounced aromas of ripe black fruit and blueberries, backed by spice, mocha, fig and balsamic notes.

The palate is generous with complex bramble and plum fruit characters, well-integrated oak and bright acidity. A vigorous, lively attack, pleasant and balanced with nice smoothness. Exquisite balance between acidity and tannins. It is structured yet elegant with fabulous length.

FOOD MATCH: Classic steak or roast lamb

Vino de Quel: The right to use the municipality (or the title “local wine”) in labeling wines of Rioja has been recognized for almost 20 years – since 1999. However, the new regulation recently approved by the Rioja DOCa Council allows these geographical entities to be given more visibility. The requirements to be able to bottle with the town or municipality on the wine label are that the grapes must come exclusively from the municipality itself, and that the production, aging and bottling are also carried out in the same locale.

And now on to our review:

The 2019 Queiron Mi Lugar Vino De Quel Rioja opens with a lovely, strong aroma full of dark berry fruit, spice, cedar and vanilla plus a hint of fig and coffee, a touch of balsamic and more. It’s a fabulous start.

Taking a sip reveals that this is just a lovely example of Rioja. Juicy, balanced, smooth and deep, there is a wonderful harmony between the fruit and oak here. All those same touches from the nose also show up in the mouth. It’s extremely pleasing and it gets even better as it has time to breathe.

It ends dry, juicy and quite long on the very satisfying finish. It was just as good on day 2. Get this high-end Rioja at an amazing price while you can!
