Today they are taking things up a notch with a very exclusive wine from the high elevation vineyards in the Howell Mountain sub-appellation of Napa Valley. This area is home to some of the best, most powerful Cabs in the world.
And the 2017 Torcia Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful example that is aged to perfection. Deep, rich and flavorful with layers of flavors, just 3,800 individually numbered bottles were produced (about 316 cases).
This Cab spends 18 months in barrel, both American and French oak, with 60% new barrels so it has a lot of oak influence. However, this remarkable Howell Mountain fruit is do decadently rich that it can handle all that oak easily and now after 8.5 years, everything has harmonized fantastically.
We easily give it a Perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ points) and Wine Independent agrees giving the wine 96 points.

2017 Torcia Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
In the Vineyard: The appellation owes its distinctive climate to the fact that it is positioned well above the valley floor. Because of its altitude, generally, evening temperatures are warmer and daytime temperatures are much cooler—leveling out spikes in heat that tend to be more exaggerated at lower elevations. Seasonally, cooler spring temperatures cause buds to break later than average, and warm summer nights produce fruit that demonstrates a great balance between acidity and sugar. Combine this with soils that are nutrient poor, stressing the vines, producing intense wines from small clusters and berries, all of which, translates into a rich diversity of complexity and flavor in your glass with excellent aging properties.
Aromas & Flavors: Firm, deep, complex aromas of earthy cranberry, dried herbs, and dark red fruit speak to the challenging growing conditions against which mountain grown fruit initially strive, conquer and then flourish. The rich, dense and balanced character of Howell Mountain flows through to the palate, where red currant, black plum and mulberry suffused with a background of raspberry, joust with a core of fine tannin, crisp acidity and sweet toasty oak.

The 2017 Torcia Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a deep, enticing aroma full of luscious dark fruit, very well-integrated spice, and touches of dried herbs, licorice, leather, mocha and much more. It’s a delightful start.
The wine tastes deep, rich and delicious and features similar flavors as the nose with juicy dark fruit, delicious baking spice and layers of flavors wrapped up in a smooth mouthfeel. Aged almost to perfection, this is an absolutely delicious wine that is just coming into its own.
It ends dry, juicy and very long and was even a bit better on day 2. We recommend drinking one bottle now and putting the other away for a special occasion in the future.

Had high expectations but did not deliver. Something missing from the flavor profile. Swing and a miss for me.
This wine was just the way I love my reds...dense, meaty, powerful and smooth...and what a bargain! Wish I'd bought 2 sets. Oh well...I have one bottle remaining, saving it for a special occasion!
