Wrath wines is back and this time they’ve brought a beautiful unoaked Chardonnay. Rated at 91 points by Master Somm Catherine Fallis, we agree putting it at a Taste Rating of 9 (91-93 points).
This is 100% Chardonnay (all Clone 4) from the 35+ year-old vines of the estate San Saba Vineyard in Monterey. Just 504 cases were produced.
Wrath uses the “Ex” moniker (“out of” in Latin) to refer to their focus on what comes out of their estate vineyard but we’ve always thought it could stand for “Ex”treme value because that’s exactly what we have in these wines. Having previously offered the Ex Pinot Noir as a stand-alone deal and the Ex Syrah in one of our red intro packs, both to stellar reviews, this time we bring you the Chardonnay!

Tasting Notes: With a name meaning “out of” in Latin, EX speaks to our focus on expressing the personality and characteristics of our Certified Sustainable (SIP) estate vineyard. Our 2021 EX Chardonnay comes from the original 35+-year old, own-rooted Clone 4 planted on our estate vineyard. It is fermented (primary only) and aged for 3 months in stainless steel. The resulting unoaked wine is bright and direct, yet deceptively rich. The nose has a subtle tropical note and flavors offer guava, banana and green apple. There is a noticeable but balanced acidity with a full mouthfeel.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Wrath Ex Unoaked Chardonnay opens with pleasing aromas of citrus, a bit of a herbal note and touches of tropical fruit (banana) and butterscotch. It’s a great start.
The wine tastes smooth, round and flavorful and features similar flavors to the nose with the juicy fruit turning a bit more tangy and tropical in the mouth. With good depth and good balance, this is very easy to drink and surprisingly (unlike a lot of white wines) it is just as good if not even a bit better once it warms up. This is quite a nice example of unoaked Chardonnay.
It ends dry and juicy on the long finish. What a bargain at today’s deal price!
