A complex and crowd-pleasing Cab from the Sierra Foothills, we review the Lava Cap El Dorado Cabernet Sauvignon.
90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc from 4 different high elevation vineyards in El Dorado, Sierra Foothills, California. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and then aged in French oak barrels.
We’re big fans of the wines of the Sierra Foothills so today we’ve got another excellent pick, this time coming from El Dorado which is just to the north of Amador County. This area is probably best known for Zinfandel, but today we’re checking out a Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Lava Cap Cab has an SRP of $35 but can be found for as low as $21.
From the bottle:
Lava Cap is a third generational family farm located in the mountains at an elevation of 2700 feet. Our unique volcanic soils, weathered from ancient ash flows, produce wines that are intensely aromatic and luscious with deep, rich fruit erupting with flavor. The Steller’s Jay, indigenous to mountainous regions, represents the natural beauty of the area.

The 2022 Lava Cap El Dorado Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of dark berry fruit reminiscent of Sweet Tart candies, lots of herbal notes and a little spice. It’s a great start.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth and balanced with good depth and concentration. Filled with fresh berry fruit and juicy acidity, it also has nice touches of spice and herbal notes throughout. With good complexity and a crowd-pleasing style, this is quite good.
It ends dry and quite long on the finish with some lasting spice notes and was slightly better on day 2.
