Le Calle di Catocci Poggio d’Oro Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG - Delish

By: Jon Thorsen Published: May 8, 2020 Last Updated: August 15, 2022

Exploring a lesser known Italian wine region with the fully organic Le Calle di Catocci Poggio d’Oro Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG.

Le Calle di Catocci Poggio d’Oro Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG - Delish

100% Sangiovese from Montecucco, Tuscany, Italy. The wine is certified organic (not just the grapes).

Montecucco (mon-tay-KOO-ko) in southern Tuscany is a region you don't hear much about here in the U.S. However it only takes one look at where the Montecucco Sangiovese DOC is situated (between Montalcino and Scansano) to know this is not an area you should not overlook. And just as would expect, the Sangiovese here is delicious.

Today's example was aged 18 months in French and Slavonian oak barrels and another 6 months in bottle before release. Only 5,000 bottles were produced.

Sample submitted for review. The Le Calle di Catocci Poggio d’Oro Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG has an SRP of $29 (Saturday Splurge) and is available for as low as $25.

    From the winery:

Produced entirely with organic Sangiovese grapes, it is intense, full, and fruity on the nose with notes of plum, red berry, and vanilla. Well-structured and balanced on the palate.

    14% Alcohol

The 2016 Le Calle di Catocci Poggio d’Oro Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG begins with a very pleasing, distinctively Italian aroma of sour black cherry, plum, spice and vanilla. Tasting reveals similar fruit to the nose, but nice and juicy in the mouth with a good bit of rustic earthiness and hints of tobacco. With good structure and nice acidity this is pretty tasty stuff! It ends with a dry, long, slightly grippy and very savory finish.
