The magic duo of Paul Scotto and Mitch Cosentino are back with another fantastic, very small production wine (just 201 cases) on their Lost Chapters label. And this time, they’ve brought a balanced, juicy, grippy, refined, complex and absolutely delicious Cabernet Franc.
We’ve been loving the excellent examples of Cabernet Franc we’ve been tasting out of California lately and this is right up there at the top of the list. Featuring 97% Cabernet Franc from the tiny Baron Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, it also has 3% Napa Valley Merlot. The wine was aged an incredibly long time (38 months) in seasoned French oak and has basically no residual sugar (0.3 g/L).
This is truly a hidden gem, but that’s what The Lost Chapters label is all about:
In 2017 The Lost Chapters was born representing the culmination of 5th generation Winemaker Paul Scotto’s dream. Each year Paul sources and crafts dozens of brands, varietals and blends for the Scotto Family’s extensive wine portfolio. In his relentless search for just the right barrel lots to fit the profile of each bottling, Paul occasionally encounters something very special that deserves its own place. While these select and limited lots may enhance a given blend, they would also present themselves far better as a stand-alone that most likely would not be repeated in future vintages.
Add to this the deep experience of Mitch and you can begin to see why this wine (and all their wines) are so special:
Mitch is the personification of a “hands-on” winemaker with his never ending drive and oversight from the vineyard to bottle and on to the glass. With his far-reaching expertise, Mitch has garnered almost 2000 awards and medals.
With foresight of things to come in the market, Mitch broke new ground with the founding of the Meritage Association (now known as the Meritage Alliance) in 1988 and produced the first American wine bottled with that designation.
Mitch is widely recognized in the international winemaking community for his blending skills, deep connection with the vineyard and amazing palate memory. He artfully combines these great skills in each of the wines he crafts exhibiting the distinctive expression of the vineyard and varietal (or mix of varietals) in precise balance.
Combining his “hands-on” tradition with a pledge to time honored Old World techniques, Mitch is committed to crafting small lots of extraordinary wines.

Winemaking: This fruit was de-stemmed and punched cap fermented by hand in one ton lots, followed by 38 months of aging in seasoned French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: Currants, cherry, spice, and mineral aromatics. Beautiful black cherry and subtle clove upfront with complex components, nicely structured with a beautiful mouth presence and firm balance. This was sourced from the small family farmed Baron Vineyard, a tiny Sonoma Valley vineyard on Highway 12 north of the town of Sonoma that yields less than five tons. This wine has great potential to age well for more than a decade, perhaps two.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 The Lost Chapters Cabernet Franc opens with lovely dark fruit plus plenty of well-integrated spice notes. Touches of leather, dried herbs, cedar, mint and more round things out on the inviting, harmonious aroma. It’s a simply wonderful start.
The wine tastes smooth, balanced, juicy, refined and lovely. There are no green notes common to this variety at all, just wonderful complexity throughout. It also has great structure and great aging potential. Dense and a bit chewy, the wine features all the same flavors and touches as the nose when tasting.
It ends dry, very long, juicy and quite grippy on the fantastic finish and it gets even better with air. It was just as good on day 2. We’re really loving Cabernet Franc these days and this is a truly excellent example.
