Appassimento on the cheap! The Trader Joe’s Nero Grande Appassimento from Femar Vini.
Primarily Primitivo (Zinfandel) blended with Negroamaro from Apulia, Italy. The wine is made from grapes allowed to dry on the vine (a technique called appassimento) and was aged for 6 months in oak barrels. It has 20 g/L of residual sugar.
This wine is available for $6.99 exclusively at Trader Joe’s. It is produced by Femar Vini, the same producer as the Epicuro wines and Ruggero di Bardo Susumaniello. It is imported by D’Aquino Italian Importing Co.
Produced according to an ancient vinification technique. It gets a mouth-filling, warm, smooth and full fruity sensations wine. Serving temperature: 16-18C
14.5% Alcohol
The 2019 Nero Grande Appassimento opens with pleasing dark, raisin-y fruit aromas plus a little spice.
Taking a sip reveals a simple, sweet and tasty wine. It features similar flavors to the nose wrapped up in a silky smooth mouthfeel. This isn’t a bad example of a wine made in the appassimento method, it’s just not a very complex one. That said, at a price of just $6.99 you can’t really expect much more in this rather expensive winemaking technique that is also used in the production of Amarone.
It ends with a long, slightly sweet, slightly grippy finish of lasting cherry and other berry flavors. Just like the Susumaniello, this is a great, inexpensive way to try a style/variety of wine that usually costs much more. Kudos to Trader Joe’s!
