Patroferno Appassimento Puglia Primitivo - A Sweet One

By: Jon Thorsen Published: January 17, 2023 Last Updated: January 17, 2023

We review the silky smooth and sweet Patroferno Appassimento Puglia Primitivo from Trader Joe's.

Patroferno Appassimento Puglia Primitivo - A Sweet One

Primitivo from Puglia, Italy. It is made in the appassimento method using dried grapes.

The Patroferno Appassimento is available exclusively at Trader Joe's (in the US) and sells for just $12.99. It is imported by Plume Ridge.

    From the bottle:

Patroferno is an appassimento style wine crafted with grapes of Primitivo. The grapes are left to dry in the sun on the plants. A powerful red, expression of Puglia, it delivers pure pleasure to the palate.

Appassimento is a full bodied, rich and complex red. It is a pure expression of the heel of Italy.A tribute to Appassimento style wines, it truly delivers the complexity of this ancient winemaking technique with rich and fruity flavors. Pair with grilled steak, tomato based dishes and roasted chicken.

    15% Alcohol

The 2021 Patroferno Appassimento Puglia Primitivo opens with tons of sweet berry aromas on the nose. Add in a little licorice, a little spice and some floral notes and it's not a bad start but it does smell quite sweet.

Tasting reveals that it is fairly sweet in the mouth as well. We couldn't find the residual sugar but guessing it is 20 g/L or more, which is not surprising given the dried grapes. With a silky smooth mouthfeel and fine tannins, it is quite good if you enjoy sweeter wines. (If you prefer dry wines I'd probably pass on this one.)

It ends with an off dry, sweet, savory and long finish. We found it to be similar on day 2.

Overall, this is pretty tasty, but we found the Campi Rudi Appassimento that is also available at Trader Joe's to be a much better value since it gets the same Taste rating but is almost half the price.

    2021 Patroferno Appassimento Puglia Primitivo

    Taste: 8 (89-90 points)      Cost: 6
    OVERALL RATING: 7.5
