Perro Callejero Cabernet Franc – A Good Find

By: Jon Thorsen Published: February 5, 2021 Last Updated: February 8, 2023

More delicious Cabernet Franc from Argentina at a great Costco price, the Perro Callejero Cabernet Franc.

Perro Callejero Cabernet Franc – A Good Find

100% Cabernet Franc, half from Los Arboles in the Uco Valley and the other half from Agrelo in Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina. The wine is aged in a combination of new French oak (60%) and concrete tanks (40%) for 6 months.

The wine has an SRP of $20 and an average wine-searcher price of $18 but we grabbed it at Costco for just $9.89. It is imported by Vinamericas, Inc.

From the bottle (the name of the wine "Perro Callejero" means "street dog" in Spanish):

Faithful to his convictions, he is a tireless pursuer. Guided by his accurate nose, he faces day after day his destiny. Perro Callejero, he will seek for his golden bone till the end. Don't try to tame him...he is his own master.

Hand-harvested, fermented in French oak barrels and concrete tanks. 60% of the wine is aged in new French oak barrels during 6 months. 40% in concrete tanks. Dark red color. Elegant on the nose, with red and black fruit aromas and hints of mint. On the palate it is fresh and well balanced, with a long finish.

Produced and bottled by Mosquita Muerta Wines
    14.5% Alcohol

The 2018 Perro Callejero Cabernet Franc begins with a really nice spicy, minty, fruity aroma. Tasting reveals a smooth and quite tasty wine with good balance. It features similar flavors to the nose with some pleasing herbal notes as well.

This is another great Cabernet Franc from Argentina, and I have been really impressed with the Argentinean examples of this variety recently. One of the reasons seems to be that they typically don't produce as many of the "green" (pyrazine) aromas and flavors as Cabernet Franc in other areas.

The wine ends dry, long and savory. This is quite a nice sipper especially at the Costco price.
