Today’s wines not only come from two unique vineyards, including the oldest Cinsault (or Cinsaut) vineyard in Stellenbosch, but also feature a unique “old school” blend of roughly two thirds Cinsaut and one third Cabernet Sauvignon.

Up first, let's check out the perfect 10 2018 Raised by Wolves Old School Red Blend from Yardstick Wines. This vintage is 67% Cinsaut from the Rustenhof Vineyard and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Bonniemile Vineyard. The wine is aged in barrel for 18 months and has just 1.8 g/L of residual sugar.

Having enjoyed many old South African Cabernet Sauvignons from the 1960’s and 1970’s, Adam Mason was enthralled to discover that many of these old gems contained far greater percentages of Cinsaut than Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the actual plantings of both varieties at the time. Using possibly the oldest producing Cinsaut vineyard in Stellenbosch (planted in 1965) and Bonniemile Cabernet planted in the 1980’s, Adam attempted to pay homage to this uniquely South African story. Vinification of both varieties was carried out in separate concrete ‘kuipe’ before transferring to barrels for 18 months maturation.

The 2018 Raised by Wolves Old School Red Blend begins with a wonderful and enticing aroma of dark fruit, white pepper, lovely aromatic spice and some garrigue-like herbal notes of rosemary and mint. This one is strong and expressive right out of the bottle unlike the younger 2019 which still needs a bit of air to fully open up.
The wine tastes smooth, elegant and oh so delicious! With a bit more depth on the fruit in this vintage compared to the 2017 we previously offered, this is really drinking nicely. I love that it is only 12.5% alcohol yet has so much flavor. Very well balanced and rather elegant, all those touches from the nose also make an appearance in the mouth with the dark fruit turning a bit more tart.
It ends with a dry, smooth, savory and grippy finish. I love this!

Given my respect for Cinsault and its heritage status in the South African wine story, I have always wanted to explore these ‘Old School’ blends. It is both incredulous and thought provoking to consider that big berried, low acid Cinsault has the ability to not only preserve, but vastly improve the King of red grapes.
12.0% Alcohol
The 2019 Raised by Wolves Old School Red Blend needs a few hours to really open up but it features a very attractive aroma of dark fruit, white pepper, lovely aromatic spice and some garrigue-like herbal notes of rosemary and mint once it does.
Taking a sip reveals a fresh, soft and quite tasty blend. Very well balanced, this is a rather elegant wine. Similar flavors to the nose lead into the dry, smooth and savory finish.
This wine really starts to hit its stride after a couple hours in the glass so I would consider decanting before serving. We found it to be pretty similar on day 2.
