A lovely wine with flavors and aromas that can only come with age and significant time in barrel. We review the Ramon Bilbao Rioja Gran Reserva.
90% Tempranillo, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from Rioja, Spain. Harvested from 60-65 year old vines at an altitude of up to 2,450 feet above sea level in Rioja Alta, the wine spends 30 months in American oak barrels (from Missouri and Ohio) plus by 48 months in the bottle before release. It is also vegan friendly.
Sample submitted for review. The Ramon Bilbao Gran Reserva has an SRP of $39 and can be found for as low as $33 (Saturday Splurge). It is imported by Zamora Company.
From the bottle:
From the grapevine to your glass and from there, flowing over your senses, rekindling memories and awakening emotions. This is where the journey begins.

The 2015 Ramon Bilbao Rioja Gran Reserva begins with a lovely, complex aroma that can only come from a wine with some significant time in a barrel as well as some age on it. Full of black cherry, lots of varied spice notes, balsamic and much more, there is plenty to discover here.
Tasting the wine reveals it to be smooth with fine tannins and similar flavors to the nose. Very harmonious and with good depth and balance, it just keeps getting better as it has more air. This wine is very easy and pleasurable to drink while still allowing you to discover something new on each sip.
It ends dry, grippy, savory, spicy and long and was similar on day 2. Just like the 2014, I can’t quite get to a 10 Taste Rating but it’s definitely a high 9.
