Reader favorite Comanche Cellars is back with a real deal Rioja-like Tempranillo from an exceptional vineyard. Aged 23 months in oak, this 91-93 point wine will please the most discerning palates. (If you loved our recent Twisted Oak Tempranillo this will be much to your liking as well.)
The grapes for the wine come from Pierce Ranch, a special little spot in Monterey:
At an elevation of 1000 feet, our vineyards are situated in an alluvial basin on the southernmost tip of Monterey County, overlooking Lake San Antonio where they reap the benefits of the warm daytime temperatures. In this warmer climate, fruit is able to ripen consistently and reach full maturity with an ease rarely seen elsewhere in Monterey County. The predominant soil types are calcareous rock, broken shale, and decomposed granite and the climate is more similar to that of Paso Robles than it is to the rest of Monterey County, with fairly hot summer temperatures and an average annual rainfall of roughly 11 inches. An ideal haven for our grape varieties, the temperature in the valley drops significantly at nightfall, allowing the vines to recover.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Comanche Cellars Pierce Ranch Tempranillo opens with a very pleasing aroma of dark fruits and a nice smoked meat note plus touches of spice, leather, licorice and a bit of balsamic. It’s a fantastic start.
Taking a sip reveals a very smooth and tasty wine with similar flavors to the nose. It’s still quite young at this point but already has great balance. It’s a pleasure to drink and it gets even better with air.
It ends dry, long, grippy and a bit dusty on the savory finish. Plenty good right out of the bottle, it was even better on day 2. It also has a long cellar life ahead of it if you have the willpower.
As we mentioned earlier, if you liked our Twisted Oak Tempranillo offer this one should be right up your alley as well.
