2022 Tooth & Nail Stasis Gamay Noir
Vineyard: Grown at Nolan and Murmur vineyards in Santa Barbara County

Stasis wines focus on coastal expressions of both renowned and obscure grape varieties. They pay homage to the Stasis Theory, a truth-seeking discipline first practiced by the great philosophers and orators of ancient Greece. Between the physical and metaphysical, there is Stasis — a balanced state of being.

Tasting Notes: The 2022 Gamay Noir is effusive out of the glass with youthful aromas of red currants, pomegranate, light spices and tomato leaf. Jammy fruit textures show flavors of Bing cherry, black raspberry and cedarwood with a hint of nutmeg baking spice. The finish is smooth, rounded and beautifully balanced. A fresh, lively rendition of Gamay Noir, inspired by the wines of Beaujolais-Villages.

Winemaking: The 2022 Gamay Noir is a blend from two distinct sites in Santa Barbara County—Nolan Vineyard (61%) in the Los Alamos Valley, and Murmur Vineyard (39%) in the Santa Maria Valley, which was planted by Tooth & Nail owner-winegrower Rob Murray in 2008.

While both sites are coastally influenced, Nolan Vineyard sees warmer afternoon temperatures compared to the ultra-cool Murmur Vineyard, allowing us to blend layered expressions of the Gamay Noir grape. The fruit from Nolan Vineyard was fermented in a concrete tank for 13 days to cultivate midpalate textures, while the fruit from Murmur Vineyard was fermented with native yeasts in 500-liter headless French oak puncheons — a labor-intensive method designed to create a pure and textural expression of the Gamay Noir grape. After gentle pressing, the lots were racked to neutral French oak barrels. After eight months of barrel maturation, the wine was blended and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

And now on to our review:

The 2022 Tooth & Nail Stasis Gamay Noir opens with a wonderful, strong, really expressive aroma of red cherry, pomegranate and cranberry plus some floral notes, a little spice and great touches of earthiness. It even has that classic touch of Beaujolais bubblegum. It’s a fantastic start.

The wine tastes…absolutely delicious! This would be spectacular with Thanksgiving dinner. It features similar flavors as the nose but with some added dark berry fruit in the mouth. A bit tart, it offers plenty of depth, good acidity, great balance, a smooth mouthfeel and also plenty of structure. This is really wonderful and has several more years of peak drinking ahead of it.

It ends dry and just a bit grippy with deep, tart flavors that last a really, really long time. It was just as good on day 2. We love this wine and it gets an easy perfect 10 Taste Rating (94+ points) from us.
