Rancho Viejo Reserva From Trader Joe’s – Grab Some

Last Updated on February 23, 2023

$6.99 well spent. We review the Rancho Viejo Reserva available at Trader Joe’s.

Rancho Viejo Reserva From Trader Joe's - Grab Some

A red blend of 50% Garnacha, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 10% Tempranillo from Navarra, Spain.

The label doesn’t specify but this wine has definitely seen some time in oak, although enough time has passed that it’s quite well integrated.

This wine is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s and sells for just $6.99. It is imported by Evaki Inc.

A reader tipped us off to this wine a few weeks back, so we were glad to finally see it show up in our local store. Let’s check it out.

From the bottle:

We have selected old vines with the most representative varietals of Spain. Low production vineyards that give extraordinary wines.

Vinicola Navarra, founded in 1864, is the oldest winery in appellation Navarra. It is based in Campanas, in the north of the appellation, just on the road to Santiago where the winery was once a pilgrim hostel.

Vinicola Navarra, was one of the founders of appellation Navarra and its unique identity is characterised in its wine by an unrivalled fruitiness and freshness.

13.5% Alcohol

The 2016 Rancho Viejo Reserva opens with pleasing aromas of black cherry and some red fruit plus a little spice and touches of balsamic, leather and licorice.

Taking a sip reveals a balanced, tasty wine with a smooth mouthfeel. It features similar flavors to the nose with a touch of an oaky streak. Overall, it’s quite harmonious although it does lack a bit of depth. But hey, you can’t have it all in a $7 wine.

It ends dry, long, savory and even a bit grippy. It was just as good on day 2, with those balsamic notes from the nose returning. It’s hard to believe the price on this one.

We love these types of finds at Trader Joe’s – quality wines from under-appreciated regions that over deliver for the price. Add that to the fact that this is a 2016 vintage, which means it has some serious time in either barrels, bottle or both, and this is a rather amazing wine for just $6.99. Stock up.
