The Red Electric Interurban is a blend of every block and clone of Pinot Noir in the dry-farmed, organically grown Armstrong Vineyard in the tiny Ribbon Ridge AVA. In fact, Ribbon Ridge is the smallest AVA in Oregon and lies entirely within the Chehalem Mountain AVA, which is entirely contained within the Willamette Valley.
Here’s how Wine-Searcher describes what makes Ribbon Ridge just so special (and the reason it is it’s own AVA):
The soils are Ribbon Ridge’s defining feature and are significantly different from those of the surrounding AVAs. While the northern Willamette Valley is famous for its volcanic Jory soils (seen in Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity Hills), Ribbon Ridge has marine sedimentary soils, having once lain at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
These ancient, weathered soils are finer and deeper than those of the surrounding landscape, causing vine stress which in turn lessens vigor and yield and leads to high-quality grapes.
And the wine itself is stunning. 9% undergoes whole cluster fermentation while the whole thing was aged 18 months in French oak barrels (9% new, 20% 1 year old, the rest 4+ years old). Just 670 cases were produced. Our first thought upon tasting? This is pure delicious!
James Suckling agrees giving it 93 points, while the “Prince of Pinot” (Rusty Gaffney) rates it at 94 points exclaiming: “this is one helluva value in premium Pinot Noir!” We agree giving it a Perfect 10 rating (94+ points).
Perhaps even better, the Interurban has an insanely good SRP of just $28. This is pretty amazing for Willamette Valley in general, even more so for a single vineyard example from the Ribbon Ridge AVA. Many of the “best value” Ribbon Ridge examples on Wine-Searcher are over $100 a bottle!

Red Electric is a collaboration between winemaker John Grochau and grape grower Douglas Ackerman, who share the belief that great wines require elegance, tension and complexity. From 1913 to 1929, the iconic Red Electric commuter trains, also known as the Interurban, began a transportation revolution, carrying passengers from Portland to the communities of the Willamette Valley that are now associated with Oregon Pinot Noir. The Interurban is blended to show you the whole of the Armstrong Vineyard in a given vintage as it is a blend of every block and clone of Pinot Noir in the vineyard. This blend is assembled to be more open knit, and immediately enjoyable than our other blends, which ask for a little patience and cellaring.
Inviting red fruit tones of plum, pie cherry and black raspberry give way to nuanced aromas of violet and lavender. With aeration the intensity of the wine builds and the easy drinking glass of Pinot Noir will challenge your palate with dry and dusty tannins that add tension and focus to the generous fruit.

The 2019 Red Electric Interurban Pinot Noir opens with a very pleasing aroma of black cherry, violets, a little brambly fruit and touches of earth and spice. It’s a wonderful start!
The first thing you notice when taking a sip is the absolutely lovely, smooth mouthfeel. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, this is pure delicious Pinot Noir. Easy to drink yet still offering plenty of complexity, it would be hard not to like this one and it gets even better with air.
It ends dry, a bit grippy and very long with lingering touches of spicy fruit. This is everything you want in a Pinot Noir!
