Rough And Ready Cab Franc vs Cab Sauv From Trader Joe’s

A battle of the Cabernets? Or just a fruit bomb of a red blend? We review the Rough And Ready Cab Franc vs Cab Sauv from Trader Joe’s.

Rough And Ready Cab Franc vs Cab Sauv From Trader Joe's Review

A blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Lodi, California.

This wine is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s and sells for $8.99.

We reviewed (and liked) the Rough and Ready Petit Verdot vs Petite Sirah a couple years ago, although we weren’t a fan of the most recent vintage. Now we’ve come to the battle of the Cabs.

And while the labeling is catchy, it doesn’t really make much sense. This isn’t about one grape versus the other, it’s about creating what is hopefully a nice blend of the two representing both varieties well. Unfortunately, mission was not accomplished on this one, although it’s not a bad wine. Read on for the full review.

From the bottle:

A brawling bout between two Cabs trading jabs.

Deep ruby in color, this dynamic duo is packed with aromas of boysenberry jam and black cherries, with hints of vanilla and lightly toasted oak.

Cellared and Bottled by Rough and Ready Wine Productions
14.8% Alcohol

The 2021 Rough And Ready Cab Franc vs Cab Sauv opens with a jammy aroma full of ripe berry fruit plus a little vanilla, spice and chocolate.

Taking a sip reveals this blend to be super ripe, jammy and fruity but still tasty. I’m not sure how this is representing Cabernet Franc versus Cabernet Sauvignon as it basically just a fruit bomb of a red blend, but it is easy to drink nonetheless.

It ends off dry, with decent length and was similar on day 2.
