A great Costco find from famed winemaker Luis Duarte, we review the Rubrica Red.
40% Alicante Bouschet, 20% Touriga Nacional, 15% Aragonês and 10% Petit Verdot from from Luis’ personal 10 hectare Monte do Carrapatelo Estate in the Alentejo region of Portugal.
Luis Duarte may not be a name you instantly recognize, but the 3 time winemaker of the year in Portugal spent many years at Esporao and now consults for some of the most respected wineries in Alentejano. The Rubrica (“signature”) label is his personal project from his own vineyards.
Sample submitted for review. The Rubrica Red has an SRP of $45 but is available at many west and midwest Costco locations for just $24.99. It is imported by Specialty Cellars.
From the winery:
Deep garnet color. Aroma of black, very fresh berries, complemented by more complex aromas of spices and mint.
Winemaking: Fermentation in lagares with intense maceration, aged 12 months in French oak barrels.
Produced and Bottled by Luis Duarte Vinhos, Lda.
14.5% Alcohol
The 2020 Rubrica Red opens with a deep, harmonious aroma full of dark berry fruit plus spice, mint and more.
The wine tastes rich and delicious with good structure, plenty of tannins and similar flavors to the nose. This one is rather young yet and has lots of aging potential.
It ends dry and long. It was still quite good on day 2 but we thought it was at its best after a couple hours of air on day 1.
