Safo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo From Aldi – Simple But Pleasing

Last Updated on October 20, 2023

A decent little Italian wine on the cheap thanks to Aldi. We review the Safo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

Safo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo From Aldi - Simple But Pleasing

Montepulciano from Abruzzo, Italy.

This wine is available exclusively at Aldi and sells for just $5.99. As typical for these private labels there is very little information available. The wine is imported by Mack & Schuhle.

From the bottle:

Ruby red wine with violet nuances, mulberry and wild cherry hints. The taste is smooth, velvety, harmonious and full-bodied. Excellent pairing with pasta with meat sauce, red meats and aged cheeses. Serve at 60/65F.

12.5% Alcohol

The 2022 Safo Montepulciano d’Abruzzo begins with a light but pleasing aroma of dark fruit, a touch of licorice and a hint of a floral note.

The wine tastes simple but pleasing and features a soft and smooth mouthfeel with red cherry and other fruit. It could use a touch more depth, but it has decent balance and probably just a bit of residual sugar to round things out.

It ends dry with good length and is a bit grippy with some lingering licorice under the fruit. This is a decent little Italian wine on the cheap.
