A basic Valpolicella Superiore with a fantastic finish, the Santi Ventale Valpolicella Superiore.
A blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella from vineyards in the Illasi Valley in the Valpolicella wine region in Veneto, Italy. The wine is aged for 18 months in 500-litre casks made of oak (70%), chestnut (20%) and cherry (10%).
Sample submitted for review. The wine has an SRP of $17 and is available for as low as $12. It is imported by Frederick Wildman and Sons, LTD.
The name Ventale (from the Italian word "vento" - wind) is inspired by the well-ventilated Illasi Valley, where the Santi winery is located. This wine embodies the most spontaneous expression of Corvina grapes and its territory. Fragrant nose, vibrant and juicy palate underpinned by velvety tannins.
13.5% Alcohol
The 2016 Santi Ventale Valpolicella Superiore opens a bit muted on the nose but swirling reveals some dark fruit and cedar with touches of spice.
The medium-bodied wine tastes nice, if perhaps a bit unexciting as far as Valpolicella Superiore goes. Featuring juicy fruit with well integrated spice it could use a bit more depth of flavor but everything works together well.
The finish redeems this one and is the best part of the wine. Very long, a bit grippy and chewy it features some intensifying spice notes that resolve into lingering earthiness.
