Grilling season is here, and you need some Zin. But not just any Zin will do, of course. So how about a couple of excellent examples from the Zin Master himself Scott Harvey?
Both of the wines we are offering in today’s 2-pack are big brothers to the Mountain Selection Zinfandel we’ve offered a number of times in the past, to much acclaim. And these two beauties crank things up a notch just as you would expect with a Reserve level wine.
First we’ve got an Old Vine Zin from a place full of old vines, Amador County. Zin was one of the original varietals planted here over 150 years ago during the Gold Rush and it’s still going strong. Today’s example comes from the Manby vineyard (74%) and the Hoddy Vineyard (19%) plus 7% Syrah from the York Vineyard in Fiddletown. Aged 21 months in French oak, just 352 cases were produced.
This is Zinfandel at its best. Dry (just 1.4 g/L of residual sugar) yet bursting with flavor and depth, this wine normally retails for $48.
The second half of today’s two pack is the Winemakers Reserve Zinfandel, a beautifully balanced and delicious example of 100% Zinfandel.
Also aged about 21 months in French oak, this wine is dry with less than 2 g/L of residual sugar. (Yet it’s once again bursting with flavor.) This wine normally retails for $40 and just 500 cases were made.
Both wines are from the 2020 vintage, which escaped any negative ramifications of the wildfires and which Scott ranks as one of the top 10 vintages of his 45+ years making wine in Amador County.

Up first, let’s take a look at the $48 Scott Harvey Old Vine Reserve Zinfandel (2020).
From the winery:
Winemaker’s Notes: Grown on steep mountainous terrain in the higher elevations of the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, California. Early budbreak with no frost and an even growing season without any heat spikes or prolonged cold spells has produced an average to larger than average size crop of high quality dark and flavorful fruit. Unlike last year all the varieties fared well except Petite Sirah. A picture-perfect year for vines and fruit. Photos from this year will be the ones used in promotional materials for years to come.
Tasting Notes: Fruit forward, rich full flavors expressing both the varietal and the Amador Terroir. This complex wine has bright cherry/berry and mulberry fruit, a full tannin structure and mouthfeel with a long finish.

The 2020 Scott Harvey Old Vine Reserve Zinfandel opens with a very pleasing, very Zin-like aroma full of black cherry, some brambly blackberry, cedar, vanilla, spice and much more. It’s a fantastic start that just keeps on getting better as it breathes.
The wine tastes smooth, with tons of rich, juicy, spicy fruit and great depth. It features similar flavors to the nose plus lots of licorice in the mouth. In addition to anything off the grill, it also went great with our charcuterie and cheese board.
It ends dry and very long and was even better on day 2. While it’s delicious now, I think it will likely keep getting even better over the next five years or so.
Next, we’ve got the $40 Scott Harvey Winemakers Reserve Zinfandel (2020).
From the winery:
Tasting Notes: Medium dark color with a briary varietal Zinfandel nose. Blackberry, mulberry, and violets add to this wine’s fleshy center and full body texture. The wine finishes with spicy fresh herbs showing a complete wine from beginning to end. Complexity with first growth quality.
Winemaker Notes: Produced in the old-world style of balanced winemaking. We want the wine to express varietal Zinfandel with good balance of fruit, French oak, structural tannins and medium alcohol.
Vintage Notes: The year of the Pandemic and excessive wildfires. Fortunately, neither effected the vintage. Turned out to be one of my top ten vintages with good balanced fruit and flavorful wine.

The 2020 Scott Harvey Winemakers Reserve Zinfandel opens with a big, enticing aroma full of ripe red and black cherry, strawberry, and a bit of mulberry and brambly fruit combined with licorice, baking spice and cedar. I love it!
The wine tastes beautifully balanced and delicious and features a round, super smooth, velvety mouthfeel and lots of ripe juicy fruit similar to the nose. Full-bodied and much more balanced than many of the over-the-top Zins out there but it’s not short on flavor either. Again, although it’s quite delicious right out of the bottle, you’ll want to give it some time to breathe to be at its absolute best.
It ends dry, long and savory and was just as good on day 2. Did I mention I love it?
