Stoller Family Estate Dundee Hills Pinot Noir Review

100% Pinot Noir from the winery’s estate vineyard in Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon. The wine was aged for 10 months in 17% new French oak barrels.

Sample submitted for review. This wine has a SRP of $40 but can sometimes be found in the low $30s (Saturday Splurge).

From the winery:

NOTES FROM THE WINEMAKER: This wine is a pure expression of the unique terroir of the Dundee Hills. A selection of blocks and clones from across our estate vineyard, this classic Oregon Pinot Noir opens with notes of ferrous minerality, baking spice, and layers of juicy red berries. On the mid-palate, the tannins are lush and soft, with a plush, generous structure. Lingering notes of cordial cherry and minerality fade into a seamless finish.

VINTAGE OVERVIEW: The 2023 vintage will be remembered as a year of abundance with harmonious grapevine development for all growing regions in the Northwest. As winter transitioned into spring, temperatures remained relatively cool, delaying bud break into late May. The weather pattern then shifted to moderately warm and dry, creating excellent conditions for an accelerated bloom that led to perfect pollination and abundant fruit set. Our vineyards ripened in the final two to three weeks of September, creating a condensed window for optimum harvest, a challenge our vineyard and winemaking teams are fully equipped to handle. Thanks to the remarkable summer and fall weather, yields were greater than average and exceeded our own estimates. The wines crafted from the 2023 vintage display excellent quality demonstrated by generous flavors and complex textures.

The 2023 Stoller Family Estate Dundee Hills Pinot Noir opens with a very pleasing, classic Pinot noir aroma of cranberry, baking spice, black cherry, forest floor and more. It’s a great start but take your time with this one and do lots of sniffing and swirling over several hours as there is lots to discover if you are patient.

The wine tastes smooth, balanced and juicy and features similar flavors to the nose. It is still quite young at this point so it needs a little time to open up but it keeps on getting better as it does.

It ends dry and long with some lasting rocky mineral notes and was just as good on day 2. Drinking this one right now, I score it a high 9 on our Taste Rating, however I do think it will improve over the next 5 years and get into 10 Taste Rating territory.
