Desert Wind Winery is back with another wine from their Reserve level Heritage Series. We’ve offered the excellent Merlot several times due to popular demand and so today we are more than happy to welcome the absolutely delicious Cabernet as well!
Estate grown in the Wahluke Slope of Washington State, this deep, smooth and balanced wine uses the best blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Syrah (25%) from the Desert Wind vineyard. Fermented with indigenous yeast, the wine is aged 20 months in a combination of new and neutral French oak. Only 260 cases were produced.
This newly released wine doesn’t have any outside scores yet but we put it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating at 92-93 points. And while it normally retails for $58 a bottle, we’re slashing that price dramatically for the next day…

Summer 2025 Shipping Options – We have both a Summer Shipping option (with heat protection) and a Summer Hold option. Our priority over the summer is to get your wine to you safely should you choose to have it shipped! Here are the details on both options:
Summer Ship (+$8) – Includes heat protection (styrofoam), freeze packs (when necessary), an upgrade to UPS 2-day shipping to minimize transit time when your order ships, and packages will only ship Monday through Wednesday to avoid them sitting somewhere hot over a weekend. Because we’re only shipping at the beginning of the week, these orders may take a bit more time to ship after the conclusion of the offer (likely 5-12 days rather than our normal 5-10). The 4th of July holiday may also add an extra day.
These orders have an additional cost of $8 built into the product price for this Heat Protection Package. It is NOT possible (nor would it be advisable!) to purchase a deal with summer shipping without also including the Heat Protection Package.
Summer Hold (No Extra Charge) – Buy your wine now and have your shipment held (at no extra charge) for delivery in October! While we take every precaution we can with our Summer Shipping protocol, we also know that many of you travel or live in very hot areas where you don’t want to risk it (or you simply detest styrofoam).
Please note this is not a “ship-at-will” program, all your summer hold orders will ship (in cardboard/no styrofoam) at a date of our choosing in mid-October once temperatures have cooled down. WINEMAKING NOTES: The 2021 growing season was one of the warmest we’ve had in recent years. With close to 40 days over 100 degrees and very little rainfall all summer, it was certainly a difficult year for grapes. Yields were down between 10-30% in most areas, but what we did get was unmatched in quality. We ended the harvest about two weeks sooner than average due to the high temperatures, and overall, our first harvest under new ownership and with our new winemaking team went by smoothly. We are so pleased with the direction Desert Wind is heading, with an increase in quality, value, and varietal and terroir expression that is evident with the 2021 vintage and beyond. The 2021 Heritage Series Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented in a more artisanal style, encouraging indigenous yeasts to carry the fermentation, which allowed us to capture the pure essence of the fruit. Each variety was fermented separately then thoughtfully blended and aged for 20 months in new and neutral French oak barrels.
VINEYARD NOTES: The Wahluke Slope AVA is located in south-central Washington and is considered one of the warmer regions in the state. Our 480 acre Desert Wind Estate Vineyard is south-facing, with a gradual two percent slope ranging from 800 to 1,000 feet in elevation. The deep, rocky soil allows for excellent drainage, stressing the vines and allowing focused energy on fruit production. The resulting wines are highly pigmented and have excellent tannin structure.
TASTING NOTES: Ripe plums, dark cherry, fig paste, cocoa powder, and dark chocolate. Swirling brings licorice, tobacco leaf, black tea, and hints of blackberry jam and oak spice. The mouthfeel is dark and broad, with a wide variety of flavors and an expressive underlying minerality. The tannins here are soft and well developed and the acid presentation is beautiful. The wine finishes long, with hints of milk chocolate, ground coffee, and a touch of olive tapenade. A one-of-a-kind Cabernet that you can enjoy now or in the next 10 years. Decanting is extremely recommended.

And now on to our review:
The 2021 Desert Wind Heritage Series Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a harmonious and very enticing aroma full of black cherry, spice, vanilla, cedar and other little touches. It’s a wonderful start.
This young wine needs a couple hours of air to really open up so be patient with it, but then it’s absolutely delicious. This is a smooth, classic Cab with great depth and balance. Featuring similar flavors to the nose, it has juicy fruit, well-integrated spice and more.
It ends dry, long, grippy and delicious and was just as good on day 2. We put this at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating. This is another winner from Desert Wind Winery!
