A perfectly acceptable wine at a great price, we review the Toro Loco Reserva Barrel Aged Red Blend.
A blend of 50% Tempranillo, 30% Bobal, 10% Merlot and 10% Shiraz that comes from Utiel-Requena, Valencia, Spain just like Aldi’s La Cornada Tempranillo we previously reviewed.
This wine is aged for 3 years before release including 1 year in American oak barrels, which is rather extraordinary considering the low price. It is also vegan friendly.
The Toro Loco Reserva is available exclusively at Aldi and sells for just $6.99. The wine is produced by BVC Bodegas which is part of Maison Benoit Valerie, a negociant and producer. It is imported by Mack & Schuhle Inc.
From the bottle:
This wine is a perfect reflection of its name. Toro Loco means “Crazy Bull” and this full bodied wine is full of life, capturing the essence of Spain.
Aged 12 months in oak barrel, to bring you a deliciously dark and fruity perfectly balanced wine to go with meat and cheese.
Bolder, bigger and seriously good!

The 2018 Toro Loco Reserva opens with aromas of dark fruit, a bit on the ripe side, plus a little vanilla and nice touches of spice.
The wine tastes smooth and has pretty good balance. It’s lacking some depth and complexity just like the La Cornada but it is perfectly fine for the price.
The Toro Loco ends dry and with good length on the finish which is also a bit grippy and has some lasting spice. It’s a surprisingly good finish for the price.
I’d say this one is just slightly better than the La Cornada overall but both wines are great for the price. It was not quite as good on day 2.
