A worthy example of Carneros at a good price, we review the Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Carneros Pinot Noir Lot 79.
Pinot Noir from Carneros, California.
This wine is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s and like all of the Platinum Reserve wines sells for $14.99.
From Trader Joe’s:
A Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve wine faithfully represents the full potential of its varietal and terroir — a kind of masterclass in what a particular grape from a particular region is truly capable of. For example, our latest entrant into the Platinum Reserve exhibits all the best qualities of Pinot Noir from Carneros: lively and delicate fruity aromatics, complex and fascinating flavors of dark red fruit, baking spice, and black tea, all of which culminate into an exquisitely balanced, refined finish. It’s the kind of wine that’s meant to be savored, and, ideally, paired with roast duck, grilled pork chops, a bit of well-aged Gouda, or, of course, a tender cut of Turkey.
Straddling the borders of Napa and Sonoma County, Carneros’s temperate climate makes it premium real estate for creating perfectly polished, lush Pinot Noirs—which often translates to premium pricing.

Carneros is a great spot for Pinot Noir and we’ve covered a number of examples from both Costco and Trader Joe’s in the past, including the excellent Kirkland Signature Carneros Pinot Noir. This is the first example from Trader Joe’s, however, that we’ve seen carrying the Platinum Reserve label. Let’s see how it measures up.
The 2021 Trader Joe’s Platinum Reserve Carneros Pinot Noir Lot 79 opens with a very pleasing aroma of black cherry, cola, black tea and leather plus a little bit of rhubarb and baking spice. It’s a classic start.
The wine tastes much like it smells with all those same touches wrapped up in a smooth mouthfeel. Easy to drink and satisfying, this is a nice example of Carneros Pinot Noir.
It ends dry with good length and was similar on day 2.
