A jammy blend for just $10, we review the Trader Joe’s Reserve Horse Heaven Hills (HHH) Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah Lot 261.
74% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Syrah from Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, Washington State. The wine does appear to have some oak influence, but there’s no information available as to how it was made.
Like all the Trader Joe’s Reserve level wines this one is priced at $9.99.
From the bottle:
Lot #261
Cabernet Sauvignon 74% – Syrah 26%Bold and juicy with notes of rich cherry and toasted oak.
Vinted and Bottled by Airway Cellars
13.5% Alcohol
It’s not clear if Airway Cellars is the same producer as the Airfield Estates Winery in Washington State, but the “Vinted and Bottled by” designation means these are likely not estate grapes even if so. (See our article “How To Choose A Good Bottle of Wine” for more information on that.)
The 2022 Trader Joe’s Reserve Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah Lot 261 opens with lots of ripe dark berry fruit on the nose along with nice touches of spice.
Taking a sip reveals this to be a tasty, jammy blend featuring similar flavors to the nose. It’s not terribly complex, but it works.
It ends dry and with good length. By day 2 it was a bit smoother and not as jammy but it also developed a bit of a green note.
