We love introducing our readers to very small, family-owned wineries that you likely would never find on your own, so today we welcome the Gaut Family and their Two:Dot wines to our deals.
And what lovely wines they are. Today’s 4-pack starts with 2 bottles of The Mantid, a 92-93 point Bordeaux blend aged 24 months in oak. Primarily Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot from the Russian River Valley this is a smooth, lush, deep, crowd-pleasing yet still very complex blend. We love it.
The other half of today’s 4-pack is two bottles of the Two:Dot single vineyard Grenache from the Dry Stack Vineyard in Bennett Valley. Harmonious and flavorful, this is an eminently drinkable example of the variety with an intriguing dash of Roussanne. We put it at 91-93 points — this is some darn good Grenache!
As we mentioned, Two:Dot is a small, family owned winery in Sonoma that started as home winemakers 20 years ago. You may; however, be wondering about the significance of the name. Here’s how it came about:
So…why two dots? Chris made his first two barrels of wine at home in 2004 from Syrah grapes farmed by neighbors and friends in Bennett Valley, near Santa Rosa, California. When it came time to bottle, he enlisted the help of his friend Dan. Dutifully sampling, Dan and Chris noticed that the two barrels of Syrah were very different. One was bold and fruity and delicious, and the other…not as much. They needed to be kept separate. Focused on the rhythms of filling and hand corking the bottles, Dan casually pondered, “how will we tell which ones are the good ones?” Chris was too distracted to answer, so Dan produced a sharpie and stamped one dot on the cork of the bottles from the first barrel and two dots on the corks from the second barrel. The success of that original two dot barrel has kept us coming back to wine making every year.

The Mantid varietals will change each year depending on our whims and the availability of grapes; it will always be intense and unique but will never bite your head off.
2018 marks the inaugural vintage of The Mantid. The first edition is a blend of old world red varietals grown in the Russian River Valley. 50% Malbec, 26% Petit Verdot, 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Cabernet Franc. Barreled for almost two years, this is a rich, balanced Bordeaux style red that will improve with age.

The 2018 Two:Dot The Mantid Red opens with very attractive and inviting aromas of spicy dark fruit, vanilla, licorice and leather. It’s a wonderful start.
Taking a sip reveals a very smooth, lush and flavorful wine with lots of well done oak influence plus great depth and balance. I love the mix of varieties in this crowd-pleasing yet still complex Bordeaux blend that puts the emphasis on the Malbec and Petit Verdot.
Delicious, juicy, ripe dark fruit and well-integrated spice lead the way into the dry and quite long finish that also has just a touch of grippiness. This harmonious wine is a pleasure to drink and it was just as good on day 2. We put it at the high end of our 9 Taste Rating.

Next we’ve got the single vineyard 2021 Two:Dot Bennett Valley Grenache, with a bit of Roussanne that works wonders. You’ve got to taste this one. You will receive two bottles in today’s 4-pack.

The 2021 Grenache is made from 100% Bennett Valley Dry Stack Vineyard grapes. This unique blend of Grenache, plus a hint of Roussanne for balance, is a medium bodied red bursting with the fruit, tannins, and acidity that make Grenache the backbone of most Rhône-style red wines. Flavors are cherry, raisin, licorice, and black pepper. This wine will get better with age and can be cellared for 5-10 years or more.

The 2021 Two:Dot Bennett Valley Grenache opens with a harmonious and inviting aroma of strawberry, licorice and mint. It’s a lovely start.
The medium-bodied wine tastes smooth and flavorful with similar flavors to the nose. The addition of the Roussanne is quite nice and really adds another element. It’s got a wonderful combination of being very drinkable and fruity now, but also seems to be quite age-worthy. It’ll be fascinating to see what this wine evolves into in another 5-10 years.
It ends dry, long and really tasty and was just as good on day 2. This is very nice!
