Another affordable Pinot Noir option? We review the William Walker Winemaker’s Reserve Pinot Noir from Aldi.
Pinot Noir from Monterey County, California.
The William Walker Winemaker’s Reserve Pinot Noir is available exclusively at Aldi and sells for just $9.99. If it sounds familiar it’s because almost everything about the wine (except the taste, more on that later) is eerily similar to the William Wright Reserve Pinot Noir also found at Aldi for $9.99.
From the bottle:
William Walker Monterey County Pinot Noir is elegant and complex, showcasing bright acidity and vibrant fruit flavors such as juicy plum, ripe strawberry, and black cherry. A harmonious balance of fruit-forward characteristics and subtle earthy undertones makes this wine a delightful expression of the grape variety and terroir.
This Pinot Noir is a versatile choice that pairs elegantly with seafood, chicken, creamy pasta dishes, and soft cheeses.

From the name, to the packaging, to the price, to the appellation, this wine certainly seems very similar to the William Wright. When we picked it up they had both wines on the shelf so it doesn’t seem to be a replacement for that wine, just a new addition. Given the limited shelf space at Aldi it would have been nice if they had used it for a completely different type of wine but let’s check it out, shall we?
The 2021 William Walker Winemaker’s Reserve Pinot Noir begins with pleasing aromas of black cherry, cola, a little licorice and black tea and a touch of cranberry. Overall it smells a bit more balanced than the William Wright with a little less earthiness.
Taking a sip reveals it to be smooth and a bit ripe featuring more fruit than the William Wright. It’s definitely on the simple side, but it’s easy to drink and very much tastes like Pinot Noir which is hard at this price point.
It ends dry and with good length and was similar on day 2 where it was still simple but also still very easy to drink.
