Clonal selection is a process that has been used by wine growers for years to promote desired characteristics of specific grape vines of the same variety. In this process clippings from vines with favorable characteristics (the “mother vines”) are grafted onto to existing rootstock to propagate the new vines.

Each one of these selections is known as a clone, and an entire world has grown up around this idea with around 1,000 different clones in Pinot Noir alone, including many officially certified by France.

While all of these clones are still 100% Pinot Noir, it is a fascinating experience to see how different they are and we’ve lined up an incredible way to do it. Both of the wines in today’s deal come from the exact same vineyard and vintage and use the same production and aging techniques. This eliminates a lot of the other variables and lets you truly see the difference in these clonal blends. And the result is utterly fascinating.

Before we get to each wine, let’s learn a bit more about the vineyard and how the wines are made:

Our Estate San Saba Vineyard is set in a sheltered nook just below the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. This is a cool site with little rainfall and one of the longest growing seasons in the world.

Our soils, Arroyo Gravelly Loam and Hanford Gravely Sandy Loam, provide a low-vigor, well-draining, disease- and pest-free medium for our vines. They also impart a subtle mineral quality to our wines. To preserve our local ecosystem, we have worked with viticultural consultant Steve McIntyre to develop a CCVT certified sustainable farming program (SIP) tailored to our estate. In addition to protecting the local environment, we believe it allows us to produce wines that are more authentic and specific to our terroir.

Vine yields are closely managed and average about 3.5 to 4 tons to the acre. Grapes are handpicked and hand sorted. Clones are kept in separate lots during fermentation and barrel aging. 20% of the lots were fermented using whole clusters to moderate acidity and add to the bouquet. Once fermented to dryness, lots are aged in an assortment of French oak barrels (20% new) from various tonnelleries (for added complexity). Wines are barrel aged for around 10 months before bottling. The bottled wine rested for another 12 months before release.

Up first, we’ve got the 2020 Wrath Swan/828 San Saba Vineyard Pinot Noir, showcasing deep, juicy fruit with just a bit of an earthy/mineral note. This is pure delicious! Today’s 4-pack deal includes 2 bottles.

This 100% Pinot Noir is made up of 54% Swan clone and 46% clone 828. Only 818 cases were produced.

From the winery:

This clonal blend uses all estate grown grapes. It combines dark cherry, raspberries and a touch of earthiness on the nose. The palate offers a balance of structure and acidity that compliments elegant, focused red berry and cherry cola with a hint of forest floor. Nimble and pure, it terminates with a long clean finish that is enhanced with a touch of mineral.

The 2020 Wrath Swan/828 San Saba Vineyard Pinot Noir opens with wonderfully enticing black cherry notes along with raspberry, cranberry, licorice, cola, mint and a touch of earthiness and cured meat saltiness. It’s a fantastic start!

My first thought after taking a sip? “Wow, this is pure delicious!” So smooth and lush on the palate, it also features fabulous depth on the juicy fruit flavors which are similar to the nose. All those secondary touches in the aroma also present quite harmoniously in the mouth along with hints of spice. Wonderfully balanced, this is the good stuff.

It ends dry, very long and lingering on the lip-smackingly good, juicy finish. It was just as good on day 2.

From there we turn to another excellent wine but this one brings the earthiness and minerality, the 2020 Wrath Pommard 4/777 San Saba Vineyard Pinot Noir. Today’s 4-pack deal includes 2 bottles.

This 100% Pinot Noir is made up of 65% Pommard 4 and 35% clone 777. Only 798 cases were produced.

From the winery:

Wrath’s blend of clones 777 and Pommard 4 has always showcased the dark, earthy side of our estate pinot fruit and the 2020 vintage is no exception. The nose shows off black cherry and forest floor. Whole cluster fermentation (20%) balances acidity and adds to its layered flavors, while a rich, seamless intensity defines the palate with bing cherry, black raspberry and an allspice element; all leading to a long, structured finish.

The 2020 Wrath Pommard 4/777 San Saba Vineyard Pinot Noir begins with aromas of black cherry plus with some iron-like mineral notes plus a little spice, a touch of sea salt and hints of cranberry and leather. It is very, very nice and quite different from the other wine in today’s deal.

Tasting reveals this one to be more on the earthy/mineral side of things but it still features wonderful juicy fruit with great depth. It also has a very smooth mouthfeel just like the Swan/828. The big difference with this wine is that all those mineral notes and a streak of earthiness kick in as well when tasting, adding a whole new dimension. It’s utterly fascinating to me that both of these 100% Pinot Noirs come from the same vineyard.

Touches of black tea, toasty oak and spice lead into the dry, very long, earthy and mineral infused finish. This one was also similar on day 2.
