Syrah is one of our very favorite varieties. We drink A LOT of Syrah and this is a really excellent example at an unbelievable price.
It comes from Wrath Wines estate San Saba Vineyard and is comprised of 3 different Syrah clones, aged 24 months before release. Structured and flavorful with that signature Syrah meatiness, this is a classic, cool-climate example of the variety.
And this wine has quite a pedigree too. Not only does it come from Wrath wines, who we have featured multiple times in All-Stars and Perfect 10 packs, but it is also the little brother to the highly acclaimed wine from the same vineyard, which scored 95 points from Wine Enthusiast for the 2020 bottling.
As the winery describes it, it is a “less oaky version of its bigger brother, San Saba Vineyard Syrah”, which has about 30% new oak, compared to 20% new oak in the 2020 Wrath EX Syrah we are offering here.
And while this wine does not have any outside reviews, we gave it a very solid 9 Taste Rating, which puts it at 91-93 points.

Vineyard Notes: Our Estate San Saba Vineyard is set in a sheltered nook just below the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. This is a cool site with little rainfall and one of the longest growing seasons in the world. Our soils, Arroyo Gravelly Loam and Hanford Gravely Sandy Loam, provide a low-vigor, well-draining, disease- and pest-free medium for our vines. They also impart a subtle mineral quality to our wines. To preserve our local ecosystem, we have worked with viticultural consultant Steve McIntyre to develop a CCVT certified sustainable farming program (SIP) tailored to our estate. In addition to protecting the local environment, we believe it allows us to produce wines that are more authentic and specific to our terroir.
Production Notes: This wine is 50% clone 17, 20% Noir and 30% 877. Only 3 acres of syrah are planted in our estate vineyard. Vine yields are closely managed and average slightly less than 4 tons to the acre. Grapes are hand picked and hand sorted. Clones are kept in separate lots during fermentation and barrel aging. 20% of the lots were fermented using whole clusters. Once fermented to dryness, lots are aged in an assortment of French oak barrels (20% new) from various tonnelleries (for added complexity). Wines are barrel aged for around 12 months before bottling. The bottled wine rested for another 12 months before release.
Tasting Notes: Full-flavored and savory, this wine has dark berries, black pepper, and dried herbs all wrapped with velvet tannins. This wine shows the savory side of our estate-grown, cool-climate syrah clusters. Black peppercorn, rosemary, cola and blueberry aromas show on the nose, while the palate has more of the same along with cracked pepper, ripe olallieberry and dried meaty flavors. It is a slightly younger, less oaky version of its bigger brother, San Saba Vineyard Syrah.

The 2020 Wrath Wines EX Syrah opens with lots of cola notes plus dark berries, black pepper, oaky spice, black licorice, a touch of smoked meat and even more as it has time to breathe. This is a great start for a classic, cool-climate Syrah.
The wine tastes wonderfully similar to the nose with a little more of the meatiness coming through on the palate. Very well structured and flavorful, this is a great example of the variety especially at this price. Yum!
It ends with a dry, long and lingering finish and was just as good on day 2. This is truly excellent, especially for the price!
